Year 5 Weekly Overview
Year 5 Weekly Overview
Dear Parents,
We have had an exciting and action-packed week at school, and we are thrilled to share the latest highlights and updates with you. There has been lots of fun, hard work, and amazing achievements across various areas. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening:
This week I was able to do focus walks on our early morning work that happens in class between 7.10 – 7.30. These 20 minutes are used to focus on any gaps from previous learning, focus on our key areas of handwriting and spelling and work on retrieval of knowledge from previous learning. It is so important to be in school on time and I am proud that generally, Middle School are here on time ready to learn.
Our Spring Fair was an absolute success, thanks to the support of our incredible parent community! We saw many families come together to enjoy a variety of activities, games, and delicious food. The children had a wonderful time, and it was great to see so many of you volunteering, contributing, and participating. It was a wonderful reminder of the spirit of our school community.
We are so proud to share that our school team participated in the BSME Games in Abu Dhabi and finished in an impressive 6th place! This was a fantastic achievement, especially considering the competitive nature of the event with school from all over the Middle East taking part. Our children gave it their all, demonstrating teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill. A special thanks to the PE team who prepared the students so well for this exciting competition.
Year 3 & 4 students also had a QPPSA Athletics competition this week. These events not only promote physical fitness but also build character and resilience. DESS were crowned the most successful team at the compeition. We look forward to more sporting opportunities in the future!
Year 4 had an amazing educational experience during their recent trip to Katara. The trip gave students a chance to explore the rich culture and history of the region, while also making sketches of an array of things with a focus on the patterns. The children will use in an upcoming Art lesson. A big thank you to the year 4 staff for making it such a memorable trip.
It was wonderful to see parent engagement starting in year 4 this week. Some classes will have theirs next week so I won’t spoil the surprise but your presence and participation are invaluable to the success of our students and school community.
Year 5 enjoyed their parental engagement last Thursday where children read their pledges and persuasive speeches. This culminated in a buoyancy test of the children’s Titanic models made from recycled materials.
Some of our talented mathematicians from year 5/6 had the opportunity to take part in a challenge with some of the other schools in Qatar. This was hosted by DESS and was an excellent opportunity for the children to push themselves to their limit. Thank you to Mr Bray for organising.
I had the pleasure of attending Choir of the Year at Doha College where our students made it to the final last night and represented us incredibly well. The children were an absolute credit to themselves, their families and the school. Getting to the final is a fantastic achievement that highlights the dedication, hard work, and passion of our young singers who were relentlessly practicing. Thank you to Mr Woodhouse and Ms Copeland for getting the children so well prepared!
Just a reminder that next is Ramadan hours. Our hours are 8.30am-1.30pm.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mr Mernagh
Head of Middle School
May this holy month bring you peace, joy and prosperity.
In the parental correspondence dated 18.02.25, school timings were shared along with gate timings as below.
Ramadan snack-times will be shorter, in line with the reduced day. Please consider this when you pack your child's lunch for the five hour school day.
Please also note that the school canteen will be closed duri.ng the month of Ramadan.
This week has been a busy week for many reasons. On Friday, a number of Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Abu Dhabi to represent our school in the BSME games. They competed in various sports and came a respectable 6th place overall after a busy 5 days! We are very proud of all of our Year 5 representatives!
On Tuesday, some members of Year 5 went to Doha College with the Voice Squad to take part in the 'Choir of the Year' competition. They performed exceptionally well which resulted in making the grand final where DESS finished in joint third place!
On the same day, DESS enjoyed our public speaking event which saw Abdul Salam (5B), Yasmine Hamdan (5C) and Krina Judianto (5D) present their speeches in the final. All of these children presented excellently and did themselves proud.
On Wednesday, Mr Bray hosted a Maths challenge for some of our talented mathematicians. The children were joined by other schools and were mixed into different groups where they had to work together to try and crack the code. The winning team then used the code to release Mr Sibley from his office after being locked away for hours! Well done to all of these children who took part.
Home learning has resumed this week and we will continue to give out the homework every Sunday. We have tried to simplify this by putting all of the tasks onto one template, on Google Classroom - this should hopefully be much easier for your child to navigate. If you do not wish for your child to complete homework, please speak directly to your child's teacher.
A reminder that Swimming has now swapped over - the girls are now swimming.
Please ensure your daughter has the following with them for their swimming days:
