Year 5 Weekly Overview
Year 5 Weekly Overview
Dear Parents,
We’ve had an exciting and eventful week at school, filled with engaging learning experiences and fantastic achievements! Here’s a look at what’s been happening:
Our Year 5 students took part in a special Green Day, where they explored sustainability and the importance of taking care of our planet. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and creative projects, the children gained a deeper understanding of how small changes can make a big difference in protecting the environment.
Year 4 stepped back in time for Viking Day, where they brought history to life. Dressed as fierce warriors and explorers, the students took part learnt about Viking life, built longships, and many more. It was truly a day to remember!
During our school meeting this week, our teachers have been working together in teams to moderate writing, ensuring consistency and high standards in our students’ work. This collaborative approach helps us to adapt planning to ensure we get the best out of our children.
Our students have shone in recent sporting events:
Year 5 Rugby: An incredible performance saw our Year 5 team go undefeated, winning gold after securing five wins and one draw!
QPPSSA Athletics Competition: 19 students from Year 5 and 6 competed, demonstrating fantastic determination and sportsmanship. DESS athletes won multiple individual medals, leading us to an impressive 2nd place overall out of 9 schools! Well done to all participants!
We’re looking forward to our Spring Fair this weekend, a wonderful event for families to come together, enjoy fun activities, and support the school. We hope to see many of you there!
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mr Mernagh
Head of Middle School

You can sign up for as many or few slots as you would like but please do not sign up over a slot that has been taken. Should you wish to volunteer but all slots are taken, Miss Forrest will send out an additional sign up if required closer to time. School fairs are a wonderful community event and they can't run without your generous support. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for taking the time to come into class and see the children's learning. The children gain a lot from this and hopefully it gave you a good insight to what we have been up to in class.
All the pictures have been uploaded to your class' relevant Google Drive folders.
Home learning has resumed this week and we will continue to give out the homework every Sunday. We have tried to simplify this by putting all of the tasks onto one template, on Google Classroom - this should hopefully be much easier for your child to navigate. If you do not wish for your child to complete homework, please speak directly to your child's teacher.
A reminder that Swimming has now swapped over - the girls are now swimming.
Please ensure your daughter has the following with them for their swimming days:
- DESS Swimwear
- Towel
- Flip flops
- Goggles
- Swim cap (if their hair is longer than their chin)
Please ensure pupils come in their PE kit on swimming days. Also please note these groups will be swimming until Thursday 27th March 2025.

At the end of the day, 5A and 5B teachers will bring the children onto the shaded playground area at 2pm (1pm Thursdays) to meet you. 5C and 5D will assemble at the side of block E, outside the 5C classroom. The Year 5 team will be around to point you in the right direction.
Please remember that parents are not to enter classrooms. The school day begins at 7:30am and pick-up is from the shaded playground at 2:00pm. REMINDER: We finish at 1:00pm on a Thursday
Please bring a full water bottle to school each day.
Please bring a hat everyday.
