Google Updates

Google Transfer

Google Transfer is turned on for the class of 2020. Google Transfer allows students to easily transfer the work from their Dedham GSuite accounts to their personal accounts.

Asynchronous Learning

What is Screen recording and why should I use one? Screen recording tools are great for asynchronous learning. Using these tools makes it easy to show and explain information visually. For example, you can open a Google Slide presentation and record yourself explaining the information and share this through a variety of GSuite applications, including Google Classroom. Google Slides also has a closed captioning feature for video and audio support.

What Short Video Clips should be used for?

  • A morning meet announcement
  • Demonstration of how to solve a difficult problem
  • Reading a book or a read aloud
  • Your expectations for the week
  • Your expectations for a project
  • Direct instruction or a short lecture (long lectures are likely useless; do a series of short ones)
  • Providing tips and reminders of material that has already been presented
  • Giving assistance with how to use new digital platforms

What shouldn’t Short Video Clips be used for?

  • Items that require real-time interaction with students.

Synchronous Learning

What could Google Meet with students be used for?

  • Academic guidance counseling
  • Meetings between class advisors and class officers
  • Technology support/troubleshooting problems
  • Homeroom / X-Block advising in small groups to support students need to navigate remote learning skills
  • Scheduling teacher office hours for students to get help with assignments and/or check in with their teacher (perhaps with a shared spreadsheet)
  • Individual virtual meeting with students with educators and staff to check on students’ well-being or to review feedback on student work
  • Educator supervised interest-based peer groups, such as a book club, drawing workshop, or sing-along group
  • Counselor-facilitated peer support groups organized around a common need
  • Group Work / Check ins
  • Ensuring supports and scaffolds for students with special accommodations (e.g. English learners, IEPS, 504)
  • Student presentations from project-based learning
