Taking the Planet Back
Students will work in groups to create a utopia, consisting of mainly recyclable material, where resource usage is strictly monitored. They will then describe how and why they made the changes they made. They will discuss what could have been done to prevent natural resources from depleting at an alarming rate and what alternatives we may use to combat the depletion.
Please note: Students may choose a different problem to solve that would better impact the world if they have a clear idea they can support.
Additional Notes: Students will make the connection between words and the actions that they initiate. How do words hold power? They will also look closely at the War of 1812 and determine the cause of the war. What does it look like when a war is over? How do countries interact with one another? Students will look at pollution and decide how it affects the living things around us.
Voice: Being responsible to stick to their goal, choosing how to communicate their information, working cooperatively with other students and expressing themselves appropriately. Communicating with others to persuade them, identifying the problem and generating a solution.
Choice: Being more organized in the classroom, choosing which depleted resource to focus on. Project they will present. They decide whether to work in teams or individually.
Ownership: Holding each other accountable reflects on their subject goals and their plans to accomplish them.
Choose: A natural resource that has been depleted.
Act: Be creative and come up with a sustainable energy solution.
Reflect: Reflect on the impact we as united humans have in our environment.
Function: How does it work? The understanding that everything has a purpose, a role or way of behaving that can be investigated.
Change: How is it changing? The understanding that change is the process of movement from one state to another. It is universal and inevitable.
Responsibility: What is our responsibility? The understanding that people make choices based on their understandings, and the actions they take as a result do make a difference.
