6th Grade
We rang in the new year by building a vision for our classrooms and agreements to live by. Our classroom community has worked on organization, lab safety and is about to embark on an investigation into a Strange New Planet. The students will take part in a simulation putting themselves in the shoes of scientists and engineers at NASA. A new exoplanet has been found revolving around Proxima Centauri the closest star to our Solar System. Students will view the Strange New Planet, Proxima b, from Earth and then from space. Assuming the mission teams agree to continue investigating, we will then send a "fly by" satellite to send back images. Following that, we will send an "orbiter" and finally, discuss sending a lander to the Strange New Planet. Mission teams will need hone their science and engineering skills as they test rockets, and equipment for Entry, Decent, and Landing: EDL.

Seventh grade is all about investigating living things. The kids start off the year distinguishing between living and nonliving things. Students were challenged to classify items such as mealworms, seeds, yeast and sea sponges. The seventh grade crew is now in the midst of learning all about the microscope. This includes learning how to focus a compound microscope and create wet mount slides for observation. Students will be wrapping up their microscope unit by researching how advances in engineering, such as the microscope, impact science. As we transition into the second quarter, the kids will begin to utilize their Discovery Education resources (found in Rapid Identity) to investigate the science behind Healing Cuts.
8th Grade
We are making and using models and planning our own investigations to learn about different types of forces and how those forces affect the motion of objects.
