The 6th grade ELA students were introduced to a new graphic design website called Canva. They created an infographic, which is a simple way to present information using graphs, charts, maps, diagrams, and pictures. Ask your student which topic they chose! They really enjoyed being creative and choosing different templates, colors, fonts, and pictures. 😃
This quarter in ELA we also focused on informational texts. Students read multiple articles on various topics. They understand what a debate is and that there can be differing opinions on issues. Our focus was on finding out what the claim is, how is the author supporting the claim with evidence, and what reasons where given to explain it in more detail. Students had debates in class, created posters, and responded to in-class discussion posts on Schoology.
We just finished reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. While students read the story, they kept track of how Jonas's perspective on his community changed throughout the novel. The story led to a lot of good discussions about dystopic communities. Ask your students what they would rate the book overall, on a 1-5 rating scale, and have them explain their rating.
8th Graders finished the 2nd quarter learning about crafting arguments. They analyzed claims, researched, and explained their reasoning.
The 8th Grade ELA team will start the 3rd Quarter with a focus on analyzing themes while reading Holocaust literature. As we know this can be a sensitive topic, we want you to be prepared if these conversations come up at home. There will be plenty of language fun, most of which will come from idioms, so ask your child if they're cool as a cucumber.
Hopefully, no one will be behind the eight ball at the end of the quarter!
