6th Grade
The quarter has ended with a study of the moon phases and eclipses. The students finished a summative assessment the week before break to finish up the quarter. When we return in January the students will do an engineering design challenge. We studied the Strange New Planet at the beginning of the year and now we are planning to go there. The students need to plan for EDL, Entry, Descent, and Landing, on the Strange New Planet. They will be designing and testing a lander that must protect an egg as it descends and lands on the new planet. Following that we will continue investigation space and focus on gravity and orbital motion and how gravity formed out solar system.

This quarter our unit was called Healing Cuts. We explored how animal cells are organized and how that leads to them being able to heal our bodies. We finished by adding plant cells and their functions. We ended the quarter with a mini-unit on Biomolecules. When we return our unit will be Kelp Forest focusing on ecological relationships.
8th Grade
We learned about the non-contact forces of gravity, magnetism, and static electricity by thinking about the Levitating Orb. Click HERE for a video. We are wrapping up the quarter by figuring out how to pick up a dropped key and a dropped ID card using what we know. When we return in January we will begin to study waves and their applications in the technology that humans use.
