Populations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that a comprehensive oral hygiene program should be developed and implemented for all patients being treated in an acute care setting and residents of long-term care facilities with the aim of reducing the risk of pneumonia (Tablan, Anderson, Besser, Bridges, & Hajjeh, 2004).
Purpose: Maintenance of good oral hygiene has been shown to decrease the risk of aspiration pneumonia across several clinical settings ranging from residential aged-care facilities to neurologic intensive-care units (Hua et al., 2016; Watando et al., 2004).
Data Collection: A simple checklist for patients and caregivers to ensure oral care is administered 2x/day. Educate patient and caregivers and provide oral hygiene brochure below.
