Diagnosis
Neurological Disorder
Degenerative Disorder
Right Hemisphere Disorder
Other individuals who experienced a cognitive-communication impairment
(Sohlberg & Mateer, 2001).
Long Term Goal
By 1/4/2023, when given a group of words, the client will explain the category using compensatory strategies in 4 out of 5 opportunities, across 2 out of 3 sessions, as measured by SLP data and observations.
Steps
The clinician reads the three words in each word group.
Clinician asks the client how the words are related and/or what category the words all belong.
Provide 5-10 minute breaks after 3 trials.
Repeat steps 1-3 until the end of the session.
Compensatory Strategies
Provide verbal prompts (e.g., Choice of 3)
Step down: choice of 2
provide visual stimulus
Provide details of items
Repeat when necessary
Session: Based on client's communication diagnosis, the duration, intensity, and interval of the sessions will be confirmed by the speech-language pathologist (MacLennan & MCD, 2012). For example, the SLP may provide 30 minute sessions on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's due to the client's functional needs.
Implementation and Evidence-Based Research
An individual's ability to provide organization involving information related to specific categories might be challenging for some individuals who have deficits in attention, memory, executive function, self-monitoring, and speed of processing information (MacLennan & MCD, 2012). Through the strategy training intervention approach, the client will enhance skills that target self-selected goals, self-evaluation, compensatory strategies, and generalization of the communication goals (MacDonald & Wiseman-Hakes, 2010). After the completion of the categorical organization activity, the client will have the opportunity to reflect and explain how to apply the skills learned towards future sessions (MacDonald & Wiseman-Hakes, 2010).
Data tracking system: SOAP notes provides efficient documentation of client information (Podder, Lew, & Ghassemzadeh, 2021). Clinician's may provide data related to the session and other notes related to client history (Podder, Lew, & Ghassemzadeh, 2021).
