Goal: By 12/18/2023, Given 20 sounds, the child will independently articulate the sound(s) of / s,z,t,d/ in the final position at the word level with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 opportunities.
Intervention Implementation: Intervention will be implemented with verbal cueing as needed. Goal will be continuously worked on with modifications to the amount of trials and picture stimulus available to the child based off of progress.
Data Tracking: Plus and minus system will be utilized to monitor progress towards the goal.
Clinician will cut out a 12-inch circle from poster board to use as a “pizza.” Use a marker to draw lines dividing the pizza into slices. (How many slices will correspond to the number of trials. Gather small pictures containing targeted final consonant deletion sounds /s,z,t,d/. The clinician will explain to the child that they will decorate the pizza with picture “toppings.” Instruct the child to name a picture with emphasis on the final consonant sound. If production is correct, the child can place the topping on the pizza.
EBP Description: Children who receive implants at younger ages generally make greater and faster strides in speech production than those that receive implants later in life. In a 2007 meta-analysis, Schafer et al. studied the effectiveness of bilateral and bimodal stimulation (i.e., two cochlear implants versus one cochlear implant and one hearing aid) and recommended bimodal stimulation as the first-order treatment approach for children who can find benefits from hearing aid use in the non-implant ear.
