According to Nancy Tye-Murray, assertiveness training is necessary for teaching individuals with hearing loss how to manage specific communication situations (Tye-Murray, 2008). This approach focus on the individual's language choice and the results of their behavior (Tye-Murray, 2008). The goal of assertiveness training is for the individual to be aware of their hearing loss and use techniques to overcome certain barriers and at the least, they can feel good about themselves for being their own advocate (Tye-Murray, 2008)
EBP: According to the "15 Principles of Consumer-Oriented Audiologic/Aural Rehabilitation" by Raymond Hull, assertiveness training can improve the individual's participation in communication situations (Hull, 2007).
Goal: In 6 months the patient will indicate their hearing loss (e.g., "I have a hearing loss. I may not understand everything you say to me") in 3/4 daily interactions with 80% accuracy as measured by self, communication partner, and/or SLP.

Activity Breakdown
Step 1: Clinician will discuss the importance of assertiveness for the patient with hearing loss
Step 2: In the session, scenarios (at a restaurant, within the workplace, Dr. office, etc.) will be created for individuals to role play and practice
Step 3: The participant will implement communicating his hearing loss to others in daily interactions and self log his process
Hierarchy Cueing
Independently: The patient implements strategy during session scenario
Gestural Cue: The clinician provides a gestural cue that indicates a certain strategy
Verbal Cue: The clinician reminds the patient about the assertiveness technique
Model: The clinician will model the hearing loss indication phrase
