All about the Immersive Reader
The Microsoft Immersive Reader is a free tool, built into Microsoft 365, in Word, OneNote, Outlook, Office Lens, Microsoft Teams, Forms, Flipgrid, Minecraft Education Edition and the Edge browser. The tool implements proven techniques to improve reading and writing for people regardless of their age or ability.
A student can use it with any text. On Microsoft Edge browser it can be used with web pages.
On selecting different options, the Immersive Reader can:
implement text-to-speech; this reads the text aloud and simultaneously highlights the text being read
present text without visual distractions (such as line spacing and line length)
change the background colour and font
break words into syllables
highlight grammar groups (e.g. verbs, nouns) in different colours (and can also name them)
provide a picture dictionary - highlighting a word will provide a definition and picture
translate individual words, or the whole document, into another language.
