To me, graphic design means expressing a deeper idea or message through a visual graphic by using the power of design. Designs are simplistic images that are easily recognizable but carry a brand and can symbolize an idea far greater than any page could contain.
As a graphic designer I attempted to embody the client’s character, idea, or expression into my visual representations so that I could accurately create a design that effectively informs an audience. I created symbolic images that could be recognized for the purpose of imprinting an impression to a consumer. One of my greatest strengths as a designer has been my ability to understand the client or the idea that I was designing for by studying and reflecting on what defined them before setting out to create a unique identity related to that idea.
Between working with digital and physical workspaces, I tended to focus on how I can create and modify a design in a digital platform through use of softwares like Adobe Illustrator. I found the potential and ease of the software to be an essential tool to design, especially when creating designs like mine that are focused on marketing and professional client work. Although I have learned many of the capabilities of the software, there will always be more to learn and new methods of using technology with the pre-programmed and programmable tools in a digital workspace to progress my process as an artist. The benefits of modifying and exploring different routes and renewing ideas in a digital workspace have helped my process in so many projects. In the future I hope I can use my graphic design skills to understand symbolism better and combine these skills to create more meaningful and impressionable ideas for professional use.
This project is one I'm nearly most proud of. In tribute of Jake Burton Carpenter, owner of Burton snowboards, we created several designs for snowboards. I'm incredibly proud of how these came out and would love to work more in this field and discover more about it.
This client project was for an upcoming event at Arts Riot. This event involved music and art in lots of ways and had a hip, edgy feel. I tried to embody the feeling and style of the art scene in Burlington with these. My designs are playful but express an idea. The logo designs are to the left and the Facebook banner design I made is below. My designs were the client's favorites!
For this project we made our own logos for the media we create. We can use these as a watermark or symbol to represent our art. I used the tag of LabRat Media because my last name is LaBrusciano-Carris. I'm proud with the variety of these logos and the color palette I chose.
For this project, we developed a name and visual concept for a new cherry-flavored energy drink. We designed logos and made mockups to show our branding on the actual can package. My initial graphic logo concepts were made in Adobe Illustrator and fused onto can mockup photos with warping effects in Adobe Photoshop. I designed mine using references from actual energy drink cans as well as some new concepts. I'm proud with the uniqueness of my designs and how different each idea is!
This project we all picked our favorite artist and created an event poster for them. I picked Atmosphere to base my poster on because it is a real event coming up at Higher Ground. I ended up making two versions because I had so much fun with the look and feel of the show's branding. I'm proud with how these came out and plan to create more for different events.
This was a design challenge when we had a time limit to create our own design concept. This design concept was to create a visual that was built up of opposite or different objects in an artistic way. For my design, I made lungs built up of smog and pollution imagery. My design was chosen by the advisory board as being the most powerful and creative!
In this project we created all of the parts for a CD Jewel Case album using influence from real artist's albums. I modeled my album after Tomppabeats who makes lo-fi beats. His style is very simplistic and clean and I think this art works well with it.
This poster was made the national board of certified teachers for their upcoming event. These posters are handed out to the certified teachers. I'm happy with how this came out but I think I could've set it up better to minimize the NBCT logo and expand the text to improve the readability.
For this challenge we were given creative choice to create something using triangles as our driving force. My idea came from using different palettes and the difference between chaos and order.
For this project, we worked with a band in Burlington, VT who play music in the style of the 1990's. They hired us to design new logos that they could use online and as stickers to promote their band. These were the designs I submitted, playing on the visual style of the 1990's!
For this project we each got a fake company to design logos and advertisements for using a Creative Brief with descriptions and interview quotes from the company. My company was a unique one- a 3D print shop that designed custom jewelry. I'm personally pretty proud of these designs and how many different varieties I made.
For this project we began looking at logos and how they can symbolize the brand in different representations in feelings. We were given the name and description of a fake company called HealthNut where we created a color scheme, design, logo, and finally a mockup candy bar to practice. Scroll to see the concepts in this product development package!
For this project, we worked with the Vermont Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to help them develop designs for the 2020 Corporate Cup race in Montpelier. Our designs had to reflect the Vermont State capital building and visuals of runners to be featured on this year's t-shirt design. These were some highlights from the concepts I submitted to the group to review!
For this project, we analyzed real magazines and made design mockups using the exact sizing specifications of their cover layouts. Once we got all the sizing and design trends right, we used our own original photography and typography/color designs to re-create the magazine cover on our own. This was my design for Transworld Snowboarding
In our exploration of typography, we used Adobe Illustrator to create an image out of text filled with quotes, words, or just phrases. I picked Alice from Alice in Wonderland and used quotes from the book and movies and used typography to visually capture the fantasy world of Alice.
For this class design challenge, we had 90 minutes to recreate a design by AJ Cassandre made in the 1930's in the Art Nouveau style for a wine bar in Paris. To recreate the design, we had to study the layout and graphic elements by eye and make our design from scratch in Adobe Illustrator. This is a side-by-side comparison of my submission compared to the original!
In this project we learned how to master the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator to create vector cartoons of ourselves that we then printed onto vinyl to create stickers.
This was a client we worked with who ran a property management business. These were the logo concepts I submitted, and I animated some of them as web-ready animations to demo how they could be used. We used these to design new branding materials and a website for their company.
For this project, we practiced arranging and designing with typography by creating a custom typography art piece in InDesign using spacing, leading, tracking, and justifying. My text explores the duality of the internet and how it defines our identities and privacy.
For this project, we mastered the pen tool and manual digital drawing techniques to make complete vector drawings of cars, vehicles, and complicated shapes. Using a photo to guide me, I made my digital drawing of the Flintstones car!
This project was a more open ended piece where we used different mediums such as paint, illustrator, photoshop, or photography to represent the color wheel.
