Before I started studying graphic design, I thought graphic design was basically just digital drawings, magazine covers, and street signs; my understanding of it lacked meaning and artistic value. However, after learning more about it, I have come to enjoy graphic design a lot and find deeper meaning in it. I now see and analyze graphics all around me. When I see a logo or a layout I think about how it was designed and what the designer intended. I also find myself thinking about what goes into powerful graphics; when I see a logo, I might think to myself, “why did you use that typography?” or “why did they use that color scheme?” In that way, it’s a process of discovery.
I think design is super interesting and super fun way to learn and try out new things in graphic arts. As an artform, I think graphic design is very freeing and allows for you to be super creative. The most important thing I have learned form this unit is the typography and the importance of alignment in layout. Before my studies I didn’t know how important those things are for the trained eye, and how much of a difference they can make for the public perception for those who do not have a trained eye for design.
My goals as a graphic designer are to be more adventurous with my designing and to learn more about the software, especially Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I think that my greatest strengths as an artist is I have a good eye for symmetry and where things should be and placement, I also really like using interesting ideas in my designs and making them to fit my style. I think that my style is colorful but neat, and I think that it works pretty well but I still would like to improve on it as well and get new techniques and tricks for my graphic designing.
For this project, we designed standard tabloid-sized posters to advertise events we would like to see at Vermont's biggest venue, Higher Ground. To make our designs, we were only allowed to use one unoriginal asset and had to design the rest ourselves using graphic design principles! For my poster, I am advertising for Cage The Elephant!
For this project, we developed a name and visual concept for a new cherry-flavored energy drink. We designed logos and made mockups to show our branding on the actual can package. I named my product "Cherry Blast" and gave it a vintage retro look with typography and color. Swipe to see my logos after the can product mockup.
This was a design challenge when we had a time limit to create our own design concept. This design concept was to create a visual that was built up of opposite or different objects in an artistic way. For my design, I made a bike composed of hundreds of cars masked out and warped to create the overall shape.
For this project, we designed a full set of branding materials for a client that was hiring our class to create advertising materials for an event at Arts Riot, a venue in Burlington. Our design submissions had to help visualize the eclectic, hip, and exciting event that combined music, live art, local product sales, and more!
For this project, we worked with a band in Burlington, VT who play music in the style of the 1990's. They hired us to design new logos that they could use online and as stickers to promote their band. These were the designs I submitted, playing on the visual style of the 1990's!
This was one of our class client jobs- we designed posters with original visual elements for the Vermont NBCT chapter to award their teachers this year. My design features original graphics based on photography of the State Capital building with careful typography arrangement and textures.
This was another class client we worked with to re-brand their property management company. We designed color schemes, logos, and web-ready animations for them to use on their website.
For this project we had to make an original album cover for an artist of our choosing. After researching and designing the cover, we created a cohesive set of art for the album in a CD Jewel Case with a back traycard, disc art, and inside cover. I chose to make my own version of Kanye West's Life of Pablo album.
For this project, we worked with the Vermont Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to help them develop designs for the 2020 Corporate Cup race in Montpelier. Our designs had to reflect the Vermont State capital building and visuals of runners to be featured on this year's t-shirt design. These were some highlights from the concepts I submitted to the group to review!
For this project, we created a piece of graphic art using typography as our main tool. The typeface I used is meant to contribute to the image concept. I made my design on Nike's "Just Do It" slogan in the shape of a shoe design using the typeface Bebas to capture the bold straight-forward feeling of the slogan.
For this project, we mastered the pen tool and manual digital drawing techniques to make complete vector drawings of cars, vehicles, and complicated shapes. Using a photo to guide me, I made my digital drawing of a Jeep!
For this project, we learned to use the Pen Tool to make cartoon portraits of ourselves. We also learned to use our vinyl printer by printing these out as stickers!
This was our first graphic design project and our first project to get to know Adobe Illustrator and vector-based drawing. For this project, we practiced how to layer, color, and combine shapes to make houses using important rudimentary shapes like rectangles, circles, polygons, stars, and more.
