In this unit of DMA, we learned about photography. I have been super passionate about photography for a very long time. Photography was one of the main reasons I joined this class and wanted to pursue media as a professional art form. Before this class, I didn't know a lot about lighting, aperture, ISO, or shutter speed and the other technical elements that make an image. I was always shooting on automatic settings instead of manually crafting my image with camera settings. After this unit I know how I can change the lighting to make it darker or lighter, how I can make the exposure longer or shorter, and also how I can change the lighting with diffusers and gels. My favorite thing in my studies has been shooting long exposures using flashlights, which is something I always wanted to learn how to do.
I think that through this unit I have become a stronger photographer and artist overall. I think taking portraits has proven to be one of my strongest abilities in photography; I think I have a good eye for focus and light, and I like working with models. Also, I think I have a pretty strong editing perspective because I can see what looks good and what doesn’t and I am willing to put attention to detail into my edits.
In the future I hope I can do something professional with photography. I think that fashion photography is super interesting and looks super fun, and it would be very cool to see a picture you took in a magazine. I don't think I would become a photographer full time, but I definitely want it to be part of my future as a hobby or side-job where I can explore my passion and share my visuals to the world.
These are some of my favorite portraits shot in our class projects making use of framing, depth of field, and editing/retouching.
This was a movie poster I made from scratch to re-create the look of the original poster from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I was able to recreate the look of the photo and design using all original assets!
For this project, we shot a series of portraits in our studio that created the look and feel of the four seasons in Vermont with lighting, props, costumes, and editing. Thanks to Hazel for being my awesome subject!
This was the first project we did in Photoshop. Our task was to choose a theme and pick at least 25 images from it to make a digital collage design. Using what we learned about masking and layering, I made this collage. I chose The office because I love the show and there was a lot of great images I could use.
This was the first project that we worked on in our class! We learned the basics of our camera and then we went outside and tried some shots out. We took landscapes, portraits and some macros. I chose my favorite two from the shoot.
For this project we tried to incorporate a frame into our photo to create a 3D effect. For my edit, I had my subject sit on something to make it look like she was sitting on the frame.
These are some products we got while experimenting with long exposure and manual flash studio photography.
These are some photo edits I made by utilizing and combining Lightroom presets and Photoshop actions as editing tools.
This was a digital manipulation piece I created using masking, Photoshop brushing, and some creative selection and layering techniques to make it look like I was "dispersing" into air.
This was a series I shot with Finn and Destiny where we used lighting on our middle gray backdrop to create the look of black, white, color, and gray backgrounds for studio portraiture.
For this project, we all chose a prop to use in a cool way in our photo. This was my favorite from that shoot using a simple slinky because I thought all the colors looked really cool and I also liked the editing to accentuate the effect!
For this project, we learned how to make GIFs in Photoshop. We first made a GIF from a photo we found on the internet, and then we made one with our own series of photos.
This was one of my favorite projects that we worked on so far. For this project we got with a group and went into the pitch black auditorium and made our camera exposures very long so we could "paint" with different lights. After doing some in class, I went home and experimented with this technique with cars driving by at night.
This was one of our first projects in class. For this project, we went outside to shoot and we were focused just on taking macro shots that captured texture in a dynamic way. I chose these two photos because I liked the varying textures and colors of the shoes, and I thought the picture of the spider resting on the flower was super cool.
This was a project to showcase mastery in Photoshop by making a surrealist edit of dozens of image assets. In my edit, I have several original images and others imported offline; however, I used manipulation techniques like warping, masking, and layering to create this surrealist scene!
For this project, we tried to create standard composition techniques and balances in an open-ended photo shoot. I created some composition techniques like rule of thirds, leading lines, cropping, and symmetry to create these shots.
For this project, we used Photoshop to create clipping mask text effects by making a series of images only show through typography. I used travel photos to create the concept of wanderlust!
This was one of my favorite shots from a class photo challenge; the goal of this challenge was to take a photo that could only work in black and white, and I think the black and white makes this photo work by bringing out the gritty emotive elements.
