In studying Graphic Design, I have been able to learn new things that I hadn’t known before about visual art. To me, graphic design as an art form means taking an idea and showing that idea in a visually creative way, whether it is a drawing or a vector-based object. One of the most important things I’ve learned during this unit is how to use the pen tool, a vector-drawing tool in illustration software like Adobe Illustrator. Also, I have learned the importance of using my creativity to design logos as they are a fundamental part of design. Although I don’t plan on becoming a professional graphic designer in the future, I still hope to use the skills I’ve learned during this unit to design a website with a personal logo.
As a graphic designer, I’d say my greatest strength is putting my creative ideas onto a screen. An area that I would like to grow in as a designer is to look outside the box and expand my ideas into bigger and better concepts. When people see my graphic designs, I want them to see how much I’ve learned in just about 2 months. Anyone can learn what I did in a short amount of time if they put their mind to it and are motivated to learn, make mistakes, and grow from them.
Through all the projects we’ve done in my studies in the Digital Media Arts program, I’ve shown mastery of this units CTE concepts by completing all of the projects with proficient grades such as vector drawing, using typography in an intentional way, showing skills throughout use of color, using my creativity to design logos for both real businesses and fake businesses, mastering the use of adobe illustrator, and much more. In starting this class, I was less familiar with graphic design, so I didn’t know what to expect while studying it and planned to focus solely on photography. However, now I can say after studying this unit, I’m excited to see the impact my graphic design skills have on my future and believe it can also improve the quality of my future photography website.
For this project, we learned to use the Pen Tool to make cartoon portraits of ourselves. We also learned to use our vinyl printer by printing these out as stickers!
For this project, we mastered the pen tool and manual digital drawing techniques to make complete vector drawings of cars, vehicles, and complicated shapes. Using a photo to guide me, I made my digital drawing of a jeep!
For this project, we practiced arranging and designing with typography by creating a custom typography art piece in InDesign using spacing, leading, tracking, and justifying. My text is a quote from a song of one of my favorite musical artists, NF.
For this project, not only did we create a photo from words, be we also used typography skills, and made it so that the font matched the word. For my project, I decided to draw coffee being poured into a mug, using the word "coffee".
For this project, we made original designs to showcase the primary and secondary colors in our own color wheel graphic. I decided to use original photography to showcase this.
For this project, we were given creative briefs that outlined information about fake businesses based on real local businesses that were seeking a re-branding with logos, advertisements, color schemes, and more. My company was Earthy Grounds, a coffee shop hoping to rebrand to have more elegance and style. These were the designs I made to reflect the company's goals and culture!
This project was part of a 90-minute design challenge where we had to create a unique design of our own using only triangle shapes as building blocks. For my design, I made an eye completely composed on triangles.
For this project, we practiced branding and logo design to create a series of logos for a fictional company that was making a peanut-butter bar that was tasty as candy and healthy as a nutritional bar. After designing some logos, we created mockups to show the logos in action on a demonstration of the packaging!
For this project, we designed standard tabloid-sized posters to advertise events we would like to see at Vermont's biggest venue, Higher Ground. To make our designs, we were only allowed to use one unoriginal asset and had to design the rest ourselves using graphic design principles. For my poster, I am advertising for NF!
For this project, we analyzed real magazines and made design mockups using the exact sizing specifications of their cover layouts. Once we got all the sizing and design trends right, we used our own original photography and typography/color designs to re-create the magazine cover on our own. This was my design for the National Geographic Magazine!
For this project, we worked with a band in Burlington, VT who play music in the style of the 1990's. They hired us to design new logos that they could use online and as stickers to promote their band. These were the designs I submitted, playing on the visual style of the 1990's!
For this assignment, we were to find an artist, and create a CD album based off of their style/mood of music. I decided to design a Shawn Mendes album! I used the classic double exposure effect to decorate my artwork by showing my own photography through Shawn Mendes's outline.
For this project, we were to use the skills we've learned in Illustrator or photoshop to design a personal logo for our own possible future careers as media artists. These were some of my favorite designs to brand myself as an artist focusing on photography.
For this project, we were to take 2 completely opposite objects, and give it a meaning. I chose to create a butterfly out of fire because I think it definitely creates something beautiful out of a dangerous thing. As a butterfly is known to be gentle and represent life, and fire is known to represent danger and death.
This was one of our class client jobs- we designed posters with original visual elements for the Vermont NBCT chapter to award their teachers this year. A board of educators voted on our designs and chose mine as their favorite, so my poster will be used to award and honor the 2020 NBCT Inductees!
This was a class client we worked with to re-brand their property management company. We designed color schemes, logos, and web-ready animations for them to use on their website. The client loved my design and chose the one on the bottom left as their official logo and website graphic!
For this project, we designed a full set of branding materials for a client that was hiring our class to create advertising materials for an event at Arts Riot, a venue in Burlington. Our design submissions had to help visualize the eclectic, hip, and exciting event that combined music, live art, local product sales, and more!
For this project, we developed a name and visual concept for a new cherry-flavored energy drink. We designed logos and made mockups to show our branding on the actual can package. I named my product "Frost" Energy!
For this class design challenge, we had 90 minutes to recreate a design by AJ Cassandre made in the 1930's in the Art Nouveau style for a wine bar in Paris. To recreate the design, we had to study the layout and graphic elements by eye and make our design from scratch in Adobe Illustrator. This is a side-by-side comparison of my submission compared to the original!
For this project, we worked with the Vermont Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to help them develop designs for the 2020 Corporate Cup race in Montpelier. Our designs had to reflect the Vermont State capital building and visuals of runners to be featured on this year's t-shirt design. These were some highlights from the concepts I submitted to the group to review!
