I am not a photographer at heart and I doubt I will be anytime soon. Yet throughout the unit I saw almost instant improvement with each snap and that was truly enthralling in its own way. I see photography as an essential key to art, one that captures lighting, action, and life itself that is needed for any artist to grow. Photography is used as a way to feel a deeper connection to humanity when so often you can feel out of place or line with who you are, a photograph can make you have hope. Art makes you feel, and photography is definitely an emotional media.
I did not see many strengths that stood out in my own photography, whether that is from my own hypocrisy or lack of experience I’m not sure. However I definitely found an odd sense of style that naturally began to form as I shot. As someone who has done illustration for so much of their life, it was strange to see a style of its own so naturally develop unlike a sketch style, which took me so many years of looking at others and stealing parts for myself after coming from nothing but a circle to be able to suddenly take a picture and see an aesthetic right off was beautiful to me.
As a photographer, I tend to focus most on colors and communicating positions with my subjects rather than relying on having interesting composition or gorgeous landscapes. My style as an artist tends to lead my edits to look more like they are an illustrated or painting-like style. I don’t think I will personally continue to do much photography in my life, as I’m an extreme homebody and have already come to a set favorite type of media, but this doesn't make me think any lesser of photographers and their outstanding type of work. I will continue to use photography for references, for aesthetic purpose, and more. People who have a love for photography will never stop surprising me in what in the real world they can capture and create from an image. I will never be able to watch a movie again without thinking of the angles, shots and lighting. It truly has made me sympathize far more for content creators of all kinds!
Using props and gels, I took pictures of Danielle to capture the look of the Four Seasons as a studio portrait series. I used a blue tint for winter, green tint for fall, pink tint for spring and orange tint for summer, as well as some editing throughout.
For this project, we re-created the look of famous movie poster designs using our own photography and editing. I sought out to remake the famous Silent of the Lambs poster. Using Hannah as my subject, I used intense hard lighting and lots of distorted noisey edits to capture the horror look of the original poster!
In our class portraiture experiments, this photo has been my favorite! These were some of my favorites, making use of depth of field to pull my subjects out of the backdrop.
A project i'm particularly proud of, I used a number of images as well as one I took of a friend to create this odd colorful piece using dozens of layers and adjustments in Photoshop.
A macro of fiberglass and inner wall material shown as almost a cave. I love the lighting that gave this macro shot mystery!
After watercoloring abstract patterns on paper, we scanned in our paintings and used Photoshop layering techniques to merge self-portrait photos into our watercolor paint strokes.
In this project I repaired and recolored an old damaged black and white photo given to me using masked color layers and lots of spot/healing brushes.
A project where we were to mask images behind some text. For this I chose to do one for my favorite game Downfall 2016 Redux a horror game taken place in a hotel.
We created this piece using layering and masking techniques where I am attacking myself with two horrified bystanders (also me!) in the background.
This project asked us to shoot a series of photos at home to respond to the "turbulent times" of the Coronavirus shutdowns. I shot my series around town, showing the bleak emptiness of the world right now.
Using an image of Jacob, I did lots of Photoshop editing using non-destructive adjustment layers to make him look red and evil, and added flames and smoke to up the effect!
For our GIF project, we made animations using the timeline in Photoshop with a series of images. I used a scene from the start of the horror game Franbow where the protagonist first meets the villain.
I had a friend help me by taking a picture of me from above to expose the paper and then added the sketch version to try to make it appear i fell asleep while drawing.
While exploring the granite factory right next to the school I created this macro photo of a rusting pole and edited it to give it a sunkissed look.
A macro close up of two jagged leaves that have a naturally glittering effect in the edges and light when you look closely!
A project where we experimented with using props we used simple props we found around the studio like chains, fairy lights and glitter to create unique portrait effects.
This was a series I shot with Destiny to experiment with double exposures, long exposures, and unique lighting effects for photography that we created in camera without any editing.
A project where we used a middle gray paper backdrop to create different looks with lighting, including grey, solid white, pure black, and colored lighting with gels!
