I have learned so much in studying graphic design. It has had a strong impact for me in terms of considering future career choices. It has opened my eyes to a whole new path that fits my artistic style and goals. I think graphic design is such an interesting art form; you start with an idea, then define the bigger message of an entire brand, and then compress it into something that represents it through simple imagery, such as a logo or advertisement. I enjoy it because people are trusting you to convey the idea of their company, business, or brand.
In my studies, I have especially enjoyed learning to use Adobe Illustrator. Originally I thought photography would be my favorite unit, only to learn that I would enjoy graphic design even more. My biggest take-away from this unit would probably be the power of simplicity. Practicing the Gestalt method truly helped me understand that less is more. I think my biggest strengths in graphic design would be that my designs are generally very original and intricate, and use color to elevate my designs. My main challenge is probably having to create designs outside of my own aesthetic, to appeal to a client’s personal taste.
Going forward using graphic design, my biggest goal would probably be using my skills to create positive change beyond income or personal gain. If I were to go on to do graphic design in my future, I would want to ensure that I work with companies in which I ethically believe in. I hope when people see my design style, it conveys simple, colorful, and modern ideas.
Advertisement Design Demo:
For this project, we were given creative briefs that outlined information about fake businesses based on real local businesses that were seeking a re-branding with logos, advertisements, color schemes, and more. My company was an architecture/construction firm who wanted elegant designs to showcase their expertise. These were the designs I made to reflect the company's goals and culture.
For this project, we were given an hour and a half to create whatever we like, as long as it was made up of triangles. For mine I chose to vector trace an image of a wasp. It was fun having to design within a time limit. My design was a finalist for the most creative voted by our advisory board judges.
For this project, we were challenged to design logos and a brand name for a cherry flavored energy drink. We then put our favorite designs on a can mockup. I went for a classic retro-look with my branding as you can see in the logo designs to the left and the mockups below!
For this project, we learned to use the Pen Tool to make cartoon portraits of ourselves. We also learned to use our vinyl printer by printing these out as stickers!
For this project, we designed standard tabloid-sized posters to advertise events we would like to see at Vermont's biggest venue, Higher Ground. To make our designs, we were only allowed to use one unoriginal asset and had to design the rest ourselves using graphic design principles! For my poster, I am advertising for Playboi Carti playing at Higher Ground.
For this project, we designed our own snowboards to honor the passing of Jake Carpenter, the Vermont native and inventor of the Snowboard and owner of Burton. I tried to create distinct styles for both of my board designs above.
For this project, we designed logos to represent ourselves as media artists. These are some of my ideation concepts to use in my professional media work.
For this project, we researched a musical artist and made mood boards about their style and artistic approach. Then we designed our own album art for one of their albums, showing a consistent concept across the cover, inside, traycard, and disc art. I made my designs for Tame Impala's album "Currents."
For this project, we worked with the Vermont Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to help them develop designs for the 2020 Corporate Cup race in Montpelier. Our designs had to reflect the Vermont State capital building and visuals of runners to be featured on this year's t-shirt design. These were some highlights from the concepts I submitted to the group to review!
The goal of this project was to make an iconic image- out of words. I chose the John Lennon and Yoko Ono Bed Peace photo and used 1960's style hippy typography to spell out the text in their silhouette. It was fun experimenting with the lines and realizing "less is more".
For this project we chose a quote or piece of writing we liked, and practiced kerning, leading, spacing, and typographic organization. We aimed to communicate through the typography- not just the words. This piece combines the text art with a graphic from my photography.
For this project, we practiced branding and logo design to create a series of logos for a fictional company that was making a peanut-butter bar that was tasty as candy and healthy as a nutritional bar. After designing some logos, we created mockups to show the logos in action on a demonstration of the packaging!
For this project, we mastered the pen tool and manual digital drawing techniques to make complete vector drawings of cars, vehicles, and complicated shapes. Using a photo to guide me, I made my digital drawing of a Ferrari!
For this project, we worked with a band in Burlington, VT who play music in the style of the 1990's. They hired us to design new logos that they could use online and as stickers to promote their band. These were the designs I submitted, playing on the visual style of the 1990's!
This was another class client we worked with to re-brand their property management company. We designed color schemes, logos, and web-ready animations for them to use on their website.
This was a design challenge where we had a time limit to create our own design concept. This design concept was to create a visual that was built up of opposite or different objects in an artistic way. For my design, I made a butterfly made of money, to show the contrast between capitalism and nature.
This was one of our class client jobs- we designed posters with original visual elements for the Vermont NBCT chapter to award their teachers this year. I made my design as a layered graphic with a Vermont mountain sunset to honor the teachers with imagery from our state.
For this project, we designed a full set of branding materials for a client that was hiring our class to create advertising materials for an event at Arts Riot, a venue in Burlington. Our design submissions had to help visualize the eclectic, hip, and exciting event that combined music, live art, local product sales, and more. For my designs I made some completely unique custom art around the typography using a vibrant color scheme.
For this class design challenge, we had 90 minutes to recreate a design by AJ Cassandre made in the 1930's in the Art Nouveau style for a wine bar in Paris. To recreate the design, we had to study the layout and graphic elements by eye and make our design from scratch in Adobe Illustrator. This is a side-by-side comparison of my submission compared to the original! Mine was chosen as the most accurate and best recreation by the judges.
