Photography has always been one of my passions since I was little and has given me artistic opportunities that I have not been able to have before. There are multiple different versions and forms of art that can tell stories in multiple different ways and photography is not an exception. The way I interpret my photography and others photography that includes peers, colleagues, and professional photographers is by a story is hidden within the image and is waiting to be found by the viewer. Photography to me is another way of communicating with others through imagery and imagination; my photos show different pieces of the main story within its layers which contain smaller stories within each layer. Some of the most important things I have learned in studying photography is how to properly use the manual settings built into cameras as well as communicating with subjects and lighting. It is essential to understand what setting should be used for taking images within specific environments, the amount of communication that the subject and photographer use during a photo shoot, and perfecting the use of focus, composition, and lighting.
As a photographer, I have ambitious goals, but the goals I have set so far are within a decent amount of difficulty and can be completed with putting in enough effort. A couple of my goals are to strengthen my skills as a photographer, to widen my portfolio within various types of social media, and to fully develop my own style of photography. Everyone has their own style of shooting photography and how they edit the images within Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop, and although I have not fully developed my own custom style of editing and shooting, I am confident my work is emerging as unique and meaningful. From what I have developed so far, my approach is to treat my environment like a canvas or a frame for the story that it tells. One of my greatest strengths as a photographer is the story I create that is told within the frame as a whole, with deeper meanings embedded within different parts of the picture. To me, images are not just a simple capture of a moment; instead, photos are events and stories held within a capsule, waiting to be opened and for the stories to be heard and told multiple times, from the original way to a different style.
Growing as a photographer is going to be difficult for me because I have just started my journey of deepening my understanding of photography in the real world and the digital world of social media. I think the hardest wall or obstacle I would hit along my journey of becoming an experienced photographer would be putting my artwork out on display and reaching out to others; criticism on work I care about is a scary prospect. My main weakness is finding the right perspective to have the photos in because different perspectives tell different views on the story within the image. When audiences look at my images, I hope that they feel like they are in the moment that the story takes place and can feel the emotion that the story tells. I have shown mastery of the CTE concepts from my studies and have shown the concepts used correctly throughout my portfolio as it stands. Even if there’s a difference between amateur and professional photographers, a photographer is still a creator, and even as an amateur for now, I bring passion and creativity at the same level as a professional.
These are some of my favorite nature and landscape photos taken during our Stowe field trip that I submitted for a project that tasked us to explore landscape photography.
This was our first project of the year! For this assignment, we got to know basic photography on DSLR cameras by shooting 3 macros, 2 portraits, and 1 landscape around campus. These were some of my favorites from the shoot!
For this project we shot macro photos that were shot off campus and imported them into Adobe Lightroom. The way I edited my macro images involved bringing out the detail using the different color options and adjusting the clarity, de-haze, changing the amount of color exposure, and adjusting the amount of grain within the images.
For this project we were asked to create the cloning effect within an image that was taken and edited in adobe photoshop. I decided to do three clones of myself and do different poses to make the cloning effect have a sense of mystery to it.
For this project, we experimented with props being used in unconventional ways to create interesting photo effects in camera. I played around with a chain going in and out of focus as well as a small prism against my lens to create these compositions!
For this series, I worked with Micah and Hannah in the studio to set up different lighting compositions using a middle gray backdrop. Using lighting, gels, and exposure techniques, we created strong looks for color, gray, white, and black backdrops for portraits!
For this project I used double exposure layer effects to combine two photos in Photoshop in the style of film-era double exposures, bringing together two photos from my trip to Hollywood last summer.
These were some photos I submitted for a class project during our shutdown for Covid-19. I used some blur effects to show the idea of "focus" and how we can stop to focus on smaller things in all of these tough times.
For this project I made a surrealist edit in Photoshop combining several layers in a completely unique and realistic manipulation art piece. Using a photo from my trip to Hollywood I added elements to create an artistic vision of the Hollywood Hills.
For this project we were asked to create a clipping mask using different images we found for a word of choice each student chose, I decided to choose Luna as my word and theme.
This was the first project we used the studio for and lead into the introduction of how to set up various lighting compositions in the studio. Between these images are some standard light setups including the Butterfly, the Rembrandt, the Split, and a Split with Fill.
For this project we used Adobe Photoshop to create pixel dispersion effects while learning about custom brush shapes and the liquify tool. I love how mine turned out!
For this project we created an illusion to show our faces through an outline mask of our sideways-facing profile, creating a really strange and dynamic double profile effect.
For this project we did a photoshoot outside on campus and edited the images in Photoshop to create the effect of the image being manipulated and reaching outside of the frame.
For this project, we shot a series of photos and used Photoshop to animated the photo layers into a GIF!
For this project, we used Lightroom to edit some original photos. As part of the project, we built custom presets that can be used for future edits in Adobe Lightroom. These are two photos using presets I built!
These are some other photos and edits shot on my personal Nikon D5600 that have been edited in Adobe Lightroom.
