Is BHS prom too expensive? Why?
By Anthony Gerrior
There are many factors that go into prom’s unusually high price for high school students. The simple answer would be fundraising.
“Fundraising over 4 years of high school. The dance was a fundraiser, and also contributes to your yearbook prices. Danversport yacht club is one of the most expensive venues around,” said Mr. Sheehan, associate principal at BHS.
Lowering the prom tickets doesn't just take the faculty members, it mostly takes action from the student body. Setting up fundraisers, raising money, and more.
“More fundraising the better, the more money you raise the cheaper the tickets are overall. Done by the student body,” Mr. Sheehan said.
Also, Danversport yacht club is said to be one of the nicest places to have prom around the area. Some would say it’s well worth the money, others would disagree. It’s a bit pricey, but from what I heard it’s the nicest venue most people have been to.
“Danversport is worth the price, it’s one of the nicest places to have a prom. Nicest venue around for sure,” Mr. Sheehan said.
Furthermore, students at BHS believe the prices are unfair, but still enjoy the prom very much.
“Prom is fun and all that good stuff, but the prices are absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn’t pay more than 20 bucks myself," Liam Welch, BHS senior, said.
People have different opinions towards the prices of prom, but no one said it wasn’t fun.
Low Attendance at School Dances
by AJ Pedruzzi
Students in Burlington High School have been showing little to no interest in school dances.
Why do school dances rarely have a full attendance? There are a lot of factors that go into these events, and sometimes it’s difficult to put them all together. Sometimes those contributing factors can be expensive and non achievable. While people agree that dances can be fun and entertaining there are factors such as space and lighting that make it hard to enjoy.
“…I [also] feel like all the dances are the same,” Liz Early, BHS sophomore, said when asked what discourages from going to dances. She felt like there was no difference between semi-formal and homecoming.
The same amount of effort was put into both dances, setting a precedent for other dances in the coming years. This is one of the reasons why people don’t come to dances because even if they are better next year people already have a preconceived notion of how it will go.
When asked if she’d go if some changes were made she said “I would definitely think about going if some changes were made, but again it really depends if it’s different than what’s happened before.”
Zachary Titus , the student president of the freshman class, shed light on some of the planning process.
“In collaboration with the sophomore class, student council members suggest theme ideas and discuss possible decor,” he said.
Working together to fundraise and decorate, the freshmen and sophomore pick a theme together, though generally the sophomores have the final say in what they should put out. It’s a combined effort to try and please everyone which can feel like a lot of pressure.
More expanded on is the fundraising that goes into school dances, the dance is set on June and as of march multiple fundraisers have gone up for the dance.

On March 22, Wellness Day returned to BHS for a second time, which provided students with the opportunity to take a break from school and explore numerous extracurricular activities.
Wellness Day is designed to provide an opportunity for students to take a break from the hustle and bustle of a normal school day, and explore alternate hobbies they might find interest in.
For example, last year Wellness Day offered students a chance to indulge themselves into activities such as yoga, volleyball, relaxing movies, or opportunities to learn about new careers.
BHS spanish teacher, Mrs. Dacey, along with BHS english teacher, Mrs. Janovitz, both headed this year's wellness program. More specifically, Mrs. Dacey urged students to sign up for each session—there will be four—in order to maximize students' time for fun.
Moreover, Mrs. Dacey could not stop expressing her excitement about the variety of options available for students as there is a class for practically every category imaginable.
“There’s so many fun things for students to explore such as yoga with Ms. Fine in the morning, a self defense class, and an athletic flexibility class with Mr. Parkin if students want to get some training done,” Mrs. Dacey, BHS Spanish teacher, said.
Despite all these positive aspects of Wellness Day, which took place the day before winter break, many students and teachers were not pleased with last year's event as it was extremely chaotic and resulted in half the student population not reporting to school that day. More specifically, one BHS student said he left school early that day due to a lack of interest in the activities provided.
“I gave Wellness Day a chance but after a little while the event was just too chaotic and uninteresting for me so I got dismissed,” Logan McGee, BHS sophomore, said.
This occurrence of kids leaving school early or not showing up in the first place caused many students to question Wellness Day as it was the day before winter break and many thought the day should have been off for students and teachers.
“I thought we should have had the day off completely. Lots of kids didn’t go to school anyways,” Logan said.
However, some enjoyed Wellness Day and saw it as an opportunity to take a break from school and explore other interests. Additionally, for many it sparked new interests that they may have not been aware about prior to the event.
“I thought Wellness Day was great!” Andy Maniscalco, BHS sophomore, said. “It was a break from school and I got to explore the video games with Mr. Wong and I learned [that] I loved to play Madden.”
Overall, wellness day was a fun opportunity for students to take a break from school and explore new interests. Nevertheless, with the second annual Wellness in the rear view mirror, students should be ecstatic to explore new opportunities in the future. If students have any questions regarding Wellness Day, feel free to contact Mrs. Dacey or Mrs. Janovitz as they would be happy to answer.
