Taylor Swift's newest album Midnights was released on October 21 and quickly became the best-selling album of the year. Swift just became the first artist in history to claim every spot on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US.
Taylor collaborated with producers Jack Antanoff and Aaron Dessner, who also produced Folklore and Evermore. The song “Snow on the Beach” features Lana del Ray singing background vocals. Taylor’s fiancé Joe Alwyn co-wrote the twelfth track “Sweet Nothing” under the pseudonym “William Bowery.”
The third track and lead single “Anti-Hero” dives into the pop star’s deepest insecurities, including her eating disorders, fears of getting older, and feelings of never being good enough.
The final track “Mastermind” is about how Taylor and Joe Alwyn are meant for each other, but Taylor schemed and planned for them to be together. The title is probably also a reference to how many fans call her a mastermind due to her many Easter eggs and clues she puts in her songs and music videos. The music video for “Bejeweled,” according to Swift, has so many Easter eggs she had to make a .pdf file for them.
In addition to the thirteen tracks on the original album, Swift also wrote seven bonus tracks which are in the Midnights (3 a.m. Edition) version of the album. The second bonus track “Bigger Than The Whole Sky” is certainly the saddest one of the entire album. It’s unclear whether the song is about a failed relationship or death, but because of the language that is used in some of the lyrics, many fans have been interpreting it to be about miscarriage.
The sixth bonus track, “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” seems to be about John Mayer, who Swift dated when she was nineteen. She is now the same age he was when they dated.
Overall, this album has been yet another success for Miss Swift and opened up new doors for theories, clues, and Easter eggs that are sure to keep fans on their toes.
