Throughout this year, being part of journalism has really helped my writing skills because of how it has forced me into different styles of writing. I normally confine myself to narrative writing styles because that is what I’m good at, but with journalism, I have learned that I am also good at writing opinion and informational pieces. I have also been able to learn the many opinions of students around the school on many topics, ranging from popular culture to sports. Many share the same opinion, but there are also a lot of students and teachers that have formed their own opinions that don’t fit in with the majority.
Another thing that journalism has helped me with is my ability to speak with new people. I have been a very social person outside of friend groups or adults I have taken the time to get to know. With this I have once again been forced into something different that I would normally never do unless needed, but now I am much more comfortable with going up to people I have never met and having conversations with them.
Journalism has really really helped me in more ways than just helping me talk with people, or improving on my writing skills, it is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life because of the helpful skills I learned from it. If I do choose to pursue a career in journalism or news writing, then I will have prior knowledge, and will know what I need to do to be good at my job. If I pursue a life in writing of any sort, I can use what I learned from the people I spoke with to make characters in narrative pieces feel more real to the reader, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the storytelling.
