BURnt-out Bhs

It seems like each and every year, students become more and more fatigued as the school-year comes to an end. This trend of exhaustion has been deemed as Academic Burnout, an emotional and mental reaction to prolonged studying and overworking. Burnout has impacted a majority of students as summer approaches.
At Burlington High School, the restlessness has become more apparent to and within the student body as most experience burnout in and outside of the classroom.
Throughout each school day, students inch closer and closer to the end. Boring lectures, stressful finals, and a tense mood linger over the heads of many. School itself seems to be too much for some as of late. Different strategies have been used to deter burnout, stress, and boredom; whether it be playing on a smart phone, reading a book, or even sleeping, students are just done with school, even though it is not over.
What is documented here is meant to show just that. This will demonstrate how students deal with the end of the school year when facing stress, fatigue, and, again, burnout.
Students are experiencing immense pressure, and it is tiring them out. Many put high expectations upon themselves, yet are not able to achieve them due to overwhelming fatigue.
“School is stressful right now as teachers are trying to cram more into a shorter amount of time, it’s just tiring. I am so tired" Emerson Waisnor, sophomore at BHS, said.
“I’m tired at school, I just can't do any of the work. I wish the days were shorter, I wish summer were here," Emily Andriolo, BHS freshman, added.
Even as the school year slows, teachers have been assigning more and more work. The student body has been feeling the repercussions, and they have left many unhappy.
“Teachers didn’t plan out the year correctly, so now they are stacking up things and I have so much work," Meghna Geo, Burlington High student, said whilst working on work at lunch.
Anthony Saliba, Burlington High sophomore, said, "I have like three projects due next week for some reason, it’s literally the last month of school. I need a break.”
“Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been assigned double the work that I have been doing for the beginning of the year," Ella Woods, Burlington High sophomore, put, "I try to do homework, but I end up falling asleep.”
There exists a small group who put up with the work in hopes for summer. While it is quite difficult, they cannot wait for the fun times of summer.
“I see no point in school anymore, so I just go on my phone” Shaila Khan, sophomore of BHS, said.
Many of these students often confide with Rocky, the new service dog in training being handled by BHS teacher Dr. Gould!
“I’m bored, I just wanna do my finals, go home, and do fun stuff with my friends," said Burlington High freshman Julia Shvartsman, "Teachers seem to be assigning work just to assign it. ”
All in all, many BHS students are persevering through the final stretch of the 2021-2022 school year. On the contrary, it seems that seniors are happily, calmly, and smoothly transitioning out, and preparing for whatever lies ahead of them.
Burlington High Seniors Sean Gallagher, Sean Cunningham, and Lucas Vaudo stand in classroom 401, smiling and getting their release forms signed, obviously!
