Funding Opportunities

Funding is always a topic here and is always hard to discuss. Check out this former departmental survey on grad student funding situation in general - it is always good to know you are not alone.

Below is a list of Berkeley and external funding sources which graduate students have previously found helpful. Please also add funding sources if you know any that is out of the list!

Emergency Loan Program

Cal offers emergency loans to students who have short-term, unanticipated expenses directly related to the cost of education. Loans are interest-free and due approximately 60 days from the date of the application of the loan. For more information, see this link also available via CalCentral.

Blu (human resources portal)

The main human resources portal is blu.berkeley.edu; you will want to familiarize yourself with this site if you are working as a GSI or GSR. Your pay stubs are available online at the Office of the President's "at your service" site.  If you have set up direct deposit, you should get an email with this information. Blu has links to:

Be fully registered ASAP

Most fellowships require you to be fully registered. This means 12 units, through Telebears, must be on your record before you can get paid. This applies even when you are on in absentia status.

In absentia status (and fees)

If you will be away from Berkeley for most of the semester you can file for in absentia status. This reduces your fees (typically to to 15% of tuition and the full cost of health insurance), but does not eliminate them. You keep your health insurance and library access.
