What happens if I haven’t had any students attending my sessions for 3 sessions in row?
Call or e-mail your SI point person to notify them. We’ll help you either reschedule your sessions or come up with a new marketing strategy.
What happens if I’m not holding a session because it is after a test, or because I will be absent?
Notify your professor via email and fill out the Session Log form as a session cancel. If possible, notify the students in your class as well.
If no one shows up to my session, do I get paid for the full hour?
As of Spring 2023 we are now piloting a new system to allow SI Leaders to get paid for the full time of their session, please see the No-Show Rule information for guidelines.
I'm having difficulty with managing my time, and I feel like I am putting a lot of time into this position. What can I do?
That's completely ok! Get in touch with your SI point person to set up a time to chat if you are having difficulties with managing your time with this position. We'll find a solution. Additionally, talk with your SI peers who have multiple semesters of experience. Check out the time management strategies for more information.
How do I mute students on the chat?
Control D will mute you on Google Meet
How do I invite people to my session?
You can email them a link, or invite them in the original set up.
Do I need to invite my professor to the SI session?
No, you do not need to invite the professor to the SI session, but you can ask the professor to post an announcement about your sessions with a link to the meetings.
Will my professor post the information for students to join my Google Meet?
They are not required to do so, but you can ask the professor to post flyers, or announcements.
Do I have to use Google Meet?
We provided Google Meet training as the best free option to hold your SI sessions. It allows both you and the students to present their screens, to allow for more active learning. It is free to all students and ACC staff because ACC has already provided all of the google suite for all of ACC. You are not required to use this platform, but you must get any other platform that you intend to use approved by the SI Admin Team. Zoom is also a great option!
What if my students can’t see the presentation?
If students have played with the screen on Google Meet, or set up the options differently, they may not see what is being presented. In the people section, the student should see the presentation window. They need to click the pin inside that window.
What if one of the students does something illegal or inappropriate online?
If you find that students do anything illegal, please ask them to stop doing this online, or in severe instances, remove them from the meeting. This is highly unusual. More often, you might find students who are slightly disruptive or off-topic. If you need any assistance in getting students back on track, contact the SI Admin Team. We will observe the session and deal with the any discipline steps as needed.
How do I collect attendance?
Use the form given to you at the beginning of the semester for your classes. Please do not change or edit the form except to fill in the relevant information about your session days/times.
Can I proctor for a test?
No, it is a SACS violation
What do I if there is a conflict in the room booking? (ie the room is double booked)
Contact your SI point person if there is an issue with double booking, and they will look into this for you. Worst case scenario, take your students to the learning lab on your campus and see if there is space for you in an emergency scenario.
Where can I find materials I need to conduct my sessions?
While your room will have many resources, you can always visit your campus learning lab for any additional materials you may need.
Can I proctor for a test if I do in person sessions?
No, it is a SACS violation
What are some ways to deal with disruptive and unengaged students?
For students being disruptive (ie not staying on task, talking about things unrelated to session) the best thing to do is to redirect them to what is going on in session, and refocus their attention. For unengaged students, one thing that can be done is to pair them with active students and have them collaborate with each other.
Worst case scenario, if a student is being disruptive and making other students uncomfortable you have full authority to ask them to leave the session.
