The following sections, on student-to-student interaction, Bloom's Taxonomy, and active learning, describe specific educational theory that underpin SI to help students engage more actively with the course material, talk to one another (instead of just you) about their questions, and solidify knowledge about concepts before undergoing formal course assessment.

The goal of SI sessions is to facilitate student-to-student interactions, rather than to repeat instructor-centered practices of lecture.

Active learning is an approach to instruction that involves actively engaging students with the course material through discussions, problem solving, case studies, role plays and other methods. This approach to learning is what we strive to achieve in our SI sessions, and as an SI Leader you will be actively cultivating an environment that promotes active learning!
