When there are 10 minutes or less left in your sessions and you want a tried-and-true way to check for understanding with your session attendees, use one of these simple activities to do that while also preparing them for the session to end--but they can absolutely be deployed at any point during a session!
Identify the Big Picture This strategy helps students to deal with the volume of information as well as identify and organize the information presented.
Informal Quiz (while working in groups or individually) Develops and reinforces comprehension, improves retention, stimulates interest in subject area, and promotes participation.
Predict Test Questions This strategy helps students focus on the specific material that has just been presented, and stresses that each SI session is a test review.
Predict the Next Lecture Topic This exercise will help students prepare for new material and understand the connections between material and events.
Summarize the Session This is a great activity to check for understanding and to bring your session to a close.
Don't forget to notify the students when the next quiz/test is, and when the next SI session is!
