Regular observations ensure that we can check in with each of you and provide you with the support you deserve. These observations are not meant to be judgmental; rather, they are a means to support you. With the additional perspective of the observer, you can receive feedback on the dynamics of your session---what is going well and what could (potentially) be improved.
The observation form is what guides the observation. Your observer will take notes on your facilitation skills throughout the session, citing specific examples of your facilitation that help, or hinder student collaboration.
Observers evaluate session facilitation across eight categories:
Wait Time
Redirection
Check for Understanding
Student-to-Student Interaction: SIL facilitation encourages students to work together in a peer-peer capacity, disrupting the typical teacher-student dynamic of education
Student Engagement: SIL engages students with the session content, activities, or discussion by incorporating all individuals (calling on names, asking questions, redirecting)
Intentional Space: SIL thoughtfully considers how to organize the session environment to best facilitate groupwork for peer-peer learning
Session Pace: SIL session facilitation is responsive to students' needs and adjusts pace to accommodate
Approachability: SIL creates a welcoming and inclusive session that facilitates peer-peer learning
Each category assessment is based on a shared rubric that outlines department expectations for SIL facilitation. Observers will document examples from the observed session to support their
Once the session is complete, SILs and Observers will meet to discuss what was observed during the session. Then, SILs and Observers will work together to identify one area of improvement with a corresponding improvement strategy for future facilitation.
If an SIL or Observer is unavailable to debrief the observed session immediately after the session is complete, both parties will work to schedule the debrief at a later time. Otherwise, debriefs will occur immediately after a session is concluded.
Your observer will notify you about an upcoming observation via email. You will also receive a calendar invite for the scheduled observation as a separate event in the SI Session Calendar. It is important to confirm the location of your session (online link or physical room number) in advance of the scheduled observation.
Make sure to email your observer with your updated session schedule!
