The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program provides academic support to traditionally difficult courses through peer-led study groups. This service is provided at no cost to students and faculty, and studies have shown that students who regularly participate in SI sessions perform on average a full letter grade better than students who don’t take advantage of the service. These study groups are led by an SI Leader, a student who previously performed well in a course and was nominated by a faculty member to support the class for future semesters. The SI Leader gets paid to attend class, take notes, and assist students with regular collaborative study group sessions, usually before or after class.
Your position is incredibly valuable to the students in your classes and the institution. Hopefully, your time as an SI Leader will also help your professional growth and development as an effective communicator, problem-solver, and leader.
Tutors
SIL are not subject-matter experts, only experts in navigating a certain course by a certain professor
Graduate/Teaching Assistants
SIL do not grade or proctor, they work for the SI Department, not for their professor
Lecturers
SIL facilitate collaborative work between students, not instructor-centered sessions
Attendance at SI sessions is optional, but is not anonymous (in the event a professor wishes to assign class/extra credit based on attendance)
If the professor allows it, students and SIL may work on homework or class assignments in session
SI was started on an in-person model, but ACC SIL support online classes and may offer online or in-person sessions
