Attending Lecture
Synchronous & In-Person Lectures - 3 hours each week
SILs are not paid to attend labs, nor will they attend lectures on exam day
Online DIL Content Review - 2 hours each week
SI Sessions - 3 hours
Each week you have 3 hours dedicated for you to host SI Sessions. Most SIL choose to break their sessions into either:
Two 1.5-hour long sessions (ex. Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:30pm)
Three 1-hour long sessions (ex. Mondays from 1:00-2:00pm, Tuesdays from 1:00-2:00pm, and Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00pm)
Remember, session times that a) take into account student preference and b) are directly before or after class tend to be the most well-attended!
Admin Time - 1 hour
Each week you have 1 hour of admin time dedicated for you to complete your administrative work. You can do this work whenever you'd like but on Workday, please log on your timesheet 1 hour at the same time every week. Make sure that time is within ACC hours and starts on the quarter hour (i.e. 1:00 pm, 2:15 pm, 7:45 pm)
Your administrative work will be elaborated upon further in this section, but includes a) planning for your sessions, b) filling out departmental forms (timesheets, logs, schedules, etc.,) and responding to correspondence from the SI Team
First Week
During the first week of the semester, you will work during your admin time (there is plenty to do on the First Week Checklist!)
You will not start holding SI sessions until the second week of class. It's good to let the course material build up just a little bit, so you'll be able to plan an action-packed first session.
Adding Sections Mid-Term: Before the semester begins, we will share a list of course sections you have been assigned to, based on your professor’s requests. If you and your professor would like you to support additional sections of their course that are not on this list, your professor should email us at SupplementalInstruction@austincc.edu with the section synonyms. Once received, we will enroll you in the additional section(s).
Scheduling Best Practices
General Info
Make sure your sessions (whether online or in-person) and admin time are scheduled within the ACC Campus Hours
Make sure your sessions start and end on the quarter hour (e.g. 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, 12:45 pm - 2:15 pm)
Scheduling Survey
Schedule your sessions at a time that works for you and the students in your class who are most interested in attending the sessions
No session schedule will work for everyone's schedules, so do your best to find a schedule that makes sense for those who are most interested in attending your sessions
Survey your students during the first week of classes to gauge their interest and availability
Check out this example session scheduling survey and the filtered results to see how you can implement this
Schedule Your SI Sessions
In-person SI Sessions
Holding sessions directly before after classes is not required, but sessions scheduled around the synchronous class time (i.e. just before or just after class) can get a higher average attendance
You will input the full 1hr 30min (or 1 hour) session in your timesheet, but you might only hold a 1hr 20min (or 50 min) session. You must wrap up your session 10 minutes early if there is a class scheduled to meet in your room right after you.
Online SI Sessions
While students tend to be a bit more flexible when attending online sessions, there is typically scattered availability
Complete the SI Session Scheduling form to tell admin when your sessions are and reserve your room on campus, if holding in-person sessions
The SI Team will send in a room request to campus management and update you by email when the request is submitted and approved.
No Attendance?
If your session times are not working for you or for the students, you have the option to adjust your session schedule during the course of the semester
Check out this example re-scheduling survey to see how you can survey your students before implementing a schedule adjustment
