Match Play Soccer at Recess
At the start of the year (and in past years), we have observed that competitive soccer matches during recess were leading to behavior challenges, overwhelming emotions, and an increase in injuries.
After reflecting on these concerns, we adjusted how soccer is played during recess, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive.
What’s New?
Focus on Skills and Play: Students can still enjoy soccer through training exercises, small-group activities, and creative play with the soccer ball. This approach allows for skill development in a safer and more enjoyable setting.
No Competitive Matches: Organized competitive matches are no longer part of recess for now. Without proper structure, these matches were difficult to manage safely and fairly.
Why These Changes Have Worked
Since making these adjustments, we’ve noticed:
Fewer Injuries and Behavior Issues: There are significantly fewer nurse visits and fewer emotional incidents tied to recess soccer.
Improved Parent Feedback: We’ve received no concerns or complaints about conflicts related to soccer play.
Calmer Classrooms: Afternoons are much more focused, with fewer lingering frustrations from competitive matches.
Looking Ahead
We’re excited to continue exploring ways for students to enjoy soccer and other activities during recess, avoiding highly competitive games. These changes have created an environment where everyone can play, learn, and grow in a positive and supportive way.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to make recess a safe and happy time for all students. If you have any questions or feedback, please let us know!
