Physical Science

34102X0J

Physical Science will explore our everyday world through a series of investigations and inquiries. Topics included are Forces and how they affect motion, Energy, Electricity, the Periodic Table, Properties of Matter, Atomic Structure, and Chemical reactions. Unlike physics or chemistry, physical science only needs a basic understanding of algebra to solve the equations and formulas. This is a great class to begin or to enhance your understanding of physics and chemistry before attempting the upper level physical science courses.

Honors Physics

34305X0H

Honors Physics is the quantitative study of matter and energy. The course is broken into four major components. The first component, mechanics, takes up a significant portion of the course. Topics in this area include velocity, acceleration, momentum, gravity, force, energy, and circular motion. The other major topics include the study of heat, waves, and electricity. This course is centered on labs and student investigation. Computers and calculator-based labs are used extensively. Physics should be taken by anyone wishing to major in science, mathematics, engineering, architecture, or medicine in college.

Biology

33202X0M

This course deals with the study of living things. Topics studied include: the structure and functions of plants and animals, the cell, the chemistry of living things, heredity, ecology, and evolution. Biology is a pre AP course, which means learners will take part in the shared principles (academic conversations, higher order questioning, evidence based writing and close observation and analysis), and lessons will engage in content by strengthening the following areas of focus: emphasis on analytical reading & writing, strategic use of mathematics and attention to modeling.

Earth/Environmental Science

35012X0

The earth/environmental science curriculum focuses on the function of the earth’s systems. Emphasis is placed on matter, energy, crystal dynamics, environmental awareness, materials availability, and the cycles that circulate energy and material through the earth system. The areas of inquiry include energy in the earth system, geochemical cycles, origin and evolution of the earth system, origin and evolution of the universe, predictability of a dynamic earth, and human interactions with the earth’s geologic and environmental systems.

Advanced Placement Biology – Fall and Spring

31007X0

Advanced Placement Biology is a rigorous and demanding year-long course of study that provides a deeper understanding of biological concepts that were introduced in Introductory Biology. Success in this course is greatly influenced by independent study to enhance understanding of lecture and laboratory investigation. Advanced Placement Biology is an honors level course and carries grades weighted on a five-point scale for the Fall semester and a six-point scale for the Spring semester. All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools. AP students are required to attend two out of three afterschool workshops in the Spring.

Advanced Placement Environmental Science – Fall and Spring

31107X0

Why is everyone concerned about bees? Is a hybrid vehicle really going to help the environment? What can I do to help the Earth? These questions and MANY more are answered through investigation, observation, and analysis in this course. The goal of AP Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand how ecosystems, natural and manmade, interact, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. Advanced Placement Environmental Science is a yearlong course that carries an honors level scale for the Fall semester and an AP scale for the Spring semester. All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools.

Advanced Placement Chemistry – Fall and Spring

31207X0

AP Chemistry is the equivalent of an introductory college-level chemistry course. AP Chemistry has both the content and the laboratory components of a typical college level chemistry course. The College Board recommends that students who take AP Chemistry should have successfully completed a first-year course in chemistry and have the math skills attained in Algebra I and II. AP Chemistry builds on the skills and knowledge attained in a standard high school course and provides the student with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of chemistry and the ability to think critically and to solve problems. Advanced Placement Chemistry is an honors level course and carries grades weighted on a five-point scale for the Fall semester and a six-point scale for the Spring semester. All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools. AP students are required to attend two out of the three afterschool workshops in the Spring.
