The major emphasis of this course is literary analysis through the study of various genres. Emphasis is also placed on understanding literary terms and concepts and developing clear, concise writing skills. Students will master different types of writing, such as narrative, descriptive, and expository. A review of proofreading and editing skills and vocabulary study will help students become proficient writers and speakers. Through this challenging course of study, students will improve their study skills and learn to pace themselves efficiently. Students should be able to read well and comprehend what has been read.

Students are introduced to world literature through the textbook as well as outside reading assignments. Students should be able to read and comprehend well, and analyze critically. Students will build on the writing skills developed in their freshman year to include argumentative and persuasive writing. Other types of writing, such as descriptive, narrative, and expository will be reinforced. Students should be able to express themselves clearly in their writing.

Students will undertake an in-depth study of American literature through the textbook as well as required outside reading assignments. Students should be able to read, comprehend, and employ higher order thinking skills to critically analyze American literature. Students will build on writing skills developed in their freshman and sophomore years to include formal essay writing as well as research skills. Students will learn to pace themselves on independent writing assignments such as critical analysis of major works of American authors.

Honors English III is another step in the accelerated English curriculum at Asheboro High School. Students in English III analyze United States literature as it reflects social perspective and historical significance by continuing to use language for expressive, expository, argumentative and literacy purposes. The emphasis in English III is critical analysis of texts through reading, writing, speaking, listening and using non print media. Summer reading is required and due on the first day of school. Students may bring two pages of handwritten notes the first day of class to use on the essays they will write in class.

Advanced Placement English Language III

AP English Language and Composition is a semester long course, offered to juniors as an introductory level college class that combines American literature, global literature, and the study of rhetoric. Students will carefully analyze a broad range of nonfiction prose selections, write several types of essays, develop critical reading and writing skills through daily in-class activities, out-of-class assignments, seminar discussions, conferences with peers about personal essays, and a process approach to all five communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.

Students will experience primarily American literature, interspersed with global literary selections, both fiction and nonfiction, through thematic units interspersed with diverse genres, which model and teach writing strategies, rhetorical devices, various genres, and stylistic devices.

CCRG-Enhanced English IV

This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a challenging college or technical preparatory track. The major emphasis of this course is writing and the study of British literature. Special attention will be paid to the ways in which the literature reflects the nature of British society from Anglo-Saxon times to the present. Students are required to read and comprehend well, and critically analyze works of British literature. Students will continue to build on writing skills developed over the past three years.The CCRG-Enhanced English IV course integrates the North Carolina ELA Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS) for Grades 11-12 and Career and College Ready learning outcomes (CCRG-LOs). In addition, educators will ensure that students meet the CCRG Learning Outcomes (CCRG-LOs) through a curriculum that includes the required EdReady English program and additional career and college ready reading and writing activities and assessments.

This course is the final step in the Honors English curriculum at Asheboro High School. The main focus of the class will be the advanced study of British literature. The course will require writing as well as research and critical thinking skills. Students who enroll in this course must be self-motivated and enjoy the challenge of an accelerated course of study. This course would give Honors English students a viable option to the AP course while maintaining an intensive, in-depth look at British literature. Summer reading and written journals are required and due on the first day of school.

Advanced Placement English Literature IV

This rigorous, yearlong course is designed to prepare highly motivated students for the Advanced Placement test to earn credit for college freshman English. All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools. It is also recommended that students enrolling in this course have completed the honors level English sequence in grades 9-11 and preferably AP English Language in their Junior year.

Advanced Placement English 12 is a writing intensive course. Students will be required to write extensively, read widely, and offer analysis of those readings in class. The study of literature will be thematic, encompassing a variety of novels, dramas, essays, and stories. A student with a weakness in a particular area, such as reading comprehension, formal composition, or grammatical construction should avoid registering for this class. AP English 12 is an honors level course and carries grades weighted on a five-point scale for the Fall semester and a six-point scale for the Spring semester. Summer reading and written journals are required and are due in the fall.
