In Advanced Placement Statistics, the student is introduced to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. The content for the course is centered on four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference, and the student will make extensive use of the available technology. This course requires that students communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms, so it is highly recommended that each student have strong writing skills for written responses. This rigorous, yearlong course is designed to prepare highly motivated students for the Advanced Placement exam to earn credit for college statistics. Students should expect daily homework requiring up to one hour. All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools.

Advanced Placement World History

The AP World History course focuses on developing students' understanding of world history from approximately 8000 B.C.E. to the present. The course has students investigate the content of world history for significant events, individuals, developments, and processes in six historical periods, and develop and use the same thinking skills and methods (analyzing primary and secondary sources, making historical comparisons, chronological reasoning, and argumentation) employed by historians when they study the past. The course also provides five themes (interaction between humans and the environment; development and interaction of cultures; state building, expansion, and conflict; creation, expansion, and interaction of economic systems; and development and transformation of social structures) that students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among historical developments in different times and places encompassing the five major geographical regions of the globe: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

Advanced Placement Seminar

AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational literary and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in research based written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments.

Advanced Placement Psychology

The AP Psychology course introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. While considering the psychologists and studies that have shaped the field, students explore and apply psychological theories, key concepts, and phenomena associated with such topics as the biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, learning and cognition, motivation, developmental psychology, testing and individual differences, treatment of abnormal behavior, and social psychology. Advanced Placement Research

AP Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest. Through this exploration, students design, plan, and conduct a year-long research based investigation to address a research question. In the AP Research course, students further their skills acquired in the AP Seminar course by understanding research methodology; employing ethical research practices; and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information as they address a research question. Students explore their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of the development of their scholarly work in a portfolio. AP English Language and Composition is a semester long course, offered to juniors as an introductory level college class that combines American literature, global literature, and the study of rhetoric. Students will carefully analyze a broad range of nonfiction prose selections, write several types of essays, develop critical reading and writing skills through daily in-class activities, out-of-class assignments, seminar discussions, conferences with peers about personal essays, and a process approach to all five communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.

Students will experience primarily American literature, interspersed with global literary selections, both fiction and nonfiction, through thematic units interspersed with diverse genres, which model and teach writing strategies, rhetorical devices, various genres, and stylistic devices.

These questions and MANY more are answered through investigation, observation, and analysis in this course. The goal of AP Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand how ecosystems, natural and manmade, interact, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. AP Chemistry is the equivalent of an introductory college-level chemistry course. AP Chemistry has both the content and the laboratory components of a typical college level chemistry course. The College Board recommends that students who take AP Chemistry should have successfully completed a first-year course in chemistry and have the math skills attained in Algebra I and II. AP U.S. History is an honors level course and carries grades weighted on a five-point scale for the fall semester and a six-point scale for the Spring semester. It is recommended that students enrolling in this course have completed the honors level English and History sequences in grades 9-10.

Advanced Placement Spanish Language - Fall and Spring

AP Spanish Language is a fifth level course. The course is designed for students who have mastered the fundamentals of the Spanish language and who are now ready to apply those skills in all subject areas. Communication and comprehension are emphasized. Students will improve their proficiency by various means, such as exclusive use of the target language in class, listening comprehension activities, challenging readings, extensive review of grammatical concepts, and AP practice tests. Students will increase proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. All students will take the AP exam in the spring and final grades on the AP exam are based on the aforementioned skills. The cost of the AP exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools. AP students are required to attend two out of three after school workshops in the Spring.

Advanced Placement English Literature IV

This rigorous, yearlong course is designed to prepare highly motivated students for the Advanced Placement test to earn credit for college freshman English. All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools. It is also recommended that students enrolling in this course have completed the honors level English sequence in grades 9-11 and preferably AP English Language in their Junior year.

Advanced Placement English 12 is a writing intensive course. Students will be required to write extensively, read widely, and offer analysis of those readings in class. The study of literature will be thematic, encompassing a variety of novels, dramas, essays, and stories. A student with a weakness in a particular area, such as reading comprehension, formal composition, or grammatical construction should avoid registering for this class. AP English 12 is an honors level course and carries grades weighted on a five-point scale for the Fall semester and a six-point scale for the Spring semester. Summer reading and written journals are required and are due in the fall.

Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles

The AP Computer Science Principles is designed to be the equivalent to a first semester introductory computer college computing course. In this course, students will develop computational thinking skills vital for success across all disciplines, such as using computational tools to analyze and study data and working with large data sets to analyze, visualize, and draw conclusions from trends. The course engages students in the creative aspects of the field by allowing them to develop computational artifacts based on their interests. Students will also develop effective communication and collaboration skills by working individually and collaboratively to solve problems, and will discuss and write about the impacts these solutions could have on their community, society, and the world.
