PLTW Principles of Biomedical Sciences Honors

This course is designed for students to investigate the human body systems and various health conditions through fictional scenarios and project based learning activities. Students will practice creative and critical thinking and gain practical experiences with experimental design and the design process. For example, students will learn to:

  • Uncover and analyze evidence to solve crime scene mysteries,

  • Question, diagnose, and propose treatment for patients in a family medical practice setting

  • Determine the source of a mystery illness outbreak at a fictional hospital,

  • Access and stabilize a patient during an emergency,

  • Prepare for a medical surge and mobile medical care,

  • Collaborate with professionals in other fields to design innovative solutions to local and global medical problems.

They determine factors that lead to the death of a fictional person and investigate lifestyle choices. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course.

Students selecting this HONORS level course should be aware that the course is developed and implemented to be more challenging than the standard level of the course in order to foster growth for advanced learners. Students enrolling in Honors CTE courses should possess the interest, ability, and motivation to meet the challenges of an honors level course. They must be willing to take greater responsibility for their learning and aspire to an advanced level of learning through high quality work.

PLTW Human Body Systems Honors

Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students work with a team or with a partner during most of the semester. Students design experiments, perform dissections, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases and often play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries. A strong science and math background is recommended as well as critical thinking skills.

PLTW Medical Interventions Honors

Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through real-world cases, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

Health Science II (Standard or Honors)

This course is designed to help students expand their understanding of medical cultural practices and trends related to health care. Students will learn:

  • employability skills such as teamwork and effective communication,

  • legal and ethical issues related to health care, and

  • basic health care skills such as hand washing and measuring height, weight, temperature, and respirations.

Students will also have the opportunity to earn industry certifications for CPR and Stop the Bleed. In place of a traditional multiple choice exam, students are assessed based on their ability to perform skills they have learned in the class. Some examples include: creating a resume, developing an infectious disease display, and a biomedical ethics research project. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course.
