AP WITH WE SERVICE: MURAL PAINTING CLUB

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2018

Sophie Choi, an 11th grade student at ASFM, contacted me to ask if I could be the sponsor to the Wall Painting Club she wanted to create. I said I would be very happy to be the sponsor and help out in any way possible.

I was able to contact Blanca Martinez, who works at the Municipio de San Pedro, and could help us find walls to paint. With her help, we went to Escuela Cuahtemoc in San Pedro, Garza Garcia and spoke to the Principal. The principal, Carmen, was very excited about the possibility of the students creating a mural for the main patio of the school. She told us that 30% of the students who attend the school speak Nahuatl and one their main purposes as an institution is to recover the "mother dialect", meaning Nahuatl. She also mentioned that the school was affiliated to the UNESCO for the work they do in teaching Nahuatl to the students once a week and the continuous work related to their traditions.

Sophie took all those ideas and created the sketch for the mural which incorporates designs and imagery of the Nahuatl culture.

Through a series of Saturday's, a group of 25+ students will sketch and paint this mural.

Besides the being part of the club, those students who are in AP Studio Art 2D/3D Design will also be pat of the AP We Service learning project and will receive extra credit in the transcript for the work done with the mural.

UNIDOS + SAC SATURDAY ACTIVITY: FOCUSED ON ART

APRIL 2018

Hilda Martinez is a senior at ASFM. Last semester she approached the Fine Arts teachers and asked us if we would like to be part of an activity involving a group of people that have disabilities from UNIDOS. The idea is that Hilda would invite 50 people from UNIDOS and have 50 ASFM students work with them on Saturdays from 10am - 1pm. Each Saturday will have a special artistic focus.
