COLLABORATION AND TRANSFERENCE: 6TH GRADE ADVISORY USING MARY BREYS "SCALES"

OCTOBER 2019

Advisory - Self Awereness

Jessica Hernandez attended the presentation Mary Brey and I gave during the Tri-Association conference. Our focus was t o use what Mary refers to as "life scales" to check in with students on their well being.

Jessica has taken the idea of the scales and created a lesson to share with the 6th grade team during Advisory. The students will be introduced to the scales and then be asked to create their own scales as well.

COLLABORATION WITH BARBARA SUNDAY AND AP ART AND DESIGN

SEPTEMBER 2019

I was fortunate enough to have Barbara Sunday come to my AP Art and Design class. During this time she had 1 on 1 conversations with my students about their portfolios. She gave them insights and input as well as direction on where to go with their work. the students were very receptive and open to listening and discussing their work. It was one of the best professional development opportunities I've ever had for myself and my students.

JUNE 2019

During the Live Curious, Go Beyond Conference, I gave a workshop called "The Visual Art Journal", Zennhya Escamilla attended my workshop and loved it.

The 8th Grade Team, at the end of the year, had a week called " Choice Learning". During this week the students had the choice of attending different workshops. Zennhya asked me if she could do a short version of my workshop with her 8th grade students and I was very happy about it!

Here are some examples of the work produced by the students.

EXPERT ADVISER: AP RESEARCH

NOVEMBER 2018

Tania de la Garza is currently my student in AP Studio Art 2D Design. She has expressed interest in pursuing a career in the Arts and is exploring her options to decide which path she will take.

She approached me to ask if I would be her Expert Adviser on her AP Research class and project and of course I said yes.

Tania's presentation took place on April 9, 2019. She was eloquent and on point. She went through her entire process and was able to answer the questions from the panel committee.

Congratulations Tania!

DISPLAY CASES FOR STUDENT WORK

ONGOING

This year the Fine Arts Department was able to purchase five display boards that will replace the old ones we have been using.

We have started using them and the student work is beautifully displayed. One of the main reasons we purchased these boards is because of the ease of rolling them out and the setup of the artwork.

Many students and teachers have made positive comments about them. I am also encouraging teachers from other disciplines to use them for their classes and student work. These are collaborative display panels for all in the MSHS building.

TEACHER COLLABORATION WITH 8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES + ART

SEPTEMBER 2018

During the first week of September, Zennhya Escamilla, 8th grade Social Studies, asked me if I could help her revamp the section for Renaissance Art that she teaches.

The objective of the class was to use executive functions (memory, planing, organizing) to compare Medieval and Renaissance Art characteristics and have students use Social-Emotional skills (help students to work as a team and feel comfortable and safe)

Comments from the students:

*We had fun while showing knowledge (analyzing images) by playing games while applying skills learned in class, like following instructions/rubric

*It was very important to read the instructions carefully

Debriefing: Students became aware that in order to be successful, they had to work as a team
