INCLUSION BADGE: NICOLE DEZARN

FEBRUARY 2020, MONTERREY, MEXICO

This is the last course of the Inclusion Badge that I started two and a half years ago. I am thankful for this opportunity and hope that I can make a difference for my students and my community.

LIVE CURIOUS, GO BEYOND CONFERENCE

FEBRUARY 2020, MONTERREY, MEXICO

Live curious, Go Beyond "happened" again at ASFM. I say happened because it is an experiential because of the hands-on aspect of it. The workshops I attended all had direct application to my classes and that is what makes them valuable to me.

“SI TUS ACCIONES INSPIRAN A OTROS A SOÑAR MÁS, APRENDER MÁS, HACER MÁS Y CONVERTIRSE EN ALGO MÁS, ENTONCES ERES UN LÍDER”.- JOHN QUINCY ADAMS

SEPTEMBER 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

This school year ASFM had the opportunity to host the Tri-Association Conference in house. This event was attended by 800+ educators and presenters. It was an incredible opportunity to learn from current educational leaders like Tom Gusky, Annie Acevedo, Myron Dueck and more.

The main focus of the conference was empathy and many of the presentations and key notes were dedicated to that theme. I got the opportunity to attend several sessions by colleagues who are doing direct work related to empathy in their classrooms. Besides being inspired, I also learned techniques and have new ideas on how to keep moving forward to becoming a better educator every day.

AP ART & DESIGN

SEPTEMBER 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

I had the delightful opportunity to take a workshop with Barbara Sunday, an AP Art and Design guru. Barbara went over all the new requirements for the class and what the students expectations are for this year.

Barbara has been an invaluable source of information and guidance for my students. She was able to attend my class and talk individually to most of the students about their current work and where they can take it from here.

I feel more confident and prepared to lead my students through this year that is full of new challenges for them.

CONFERENCE: “Strength-Based Teaching: Bringing Out the Best in Students & Teachers”

APRIL 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

I had the opportunity to attend a conference by Lea Waters presented at ASFM. My biggest take away from her talk was to always look for positive strengths in my students and my own children as well.

UNIFIED CLASSROOM TRAINING

MARCH 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

As a Digital Teacher, I was invited to this training to become a facilitator for other staff when this change happens at our campus. The focus of the training was the navigation of the new platform to learn where will our documents, class pages, handouts, etc. will be located.

LIVE CURIOUS, GO BEYOND

FEBRUARY 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

This is the fifth year I have had the opportunity to attend the Live Curious, Go Beyond conferences. This event has grown from being almost an in-house event to an international movement.

This year I am excited to say that I am part of the presenters with a session called "The Visual Art Journal". I am thankful I get to share my knowledge as well as learn from my colleagues.

INCLUSION BADGE: NICOLE DEZARN

FEBRUARY 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

Nicole was the presenter for this part of the Inclusion Badge.

She focused on "working wit families that have children with disabilities".

My biggest take away from her presentation is to always put yourself in other people's shoes. Always consider what the families are going through when trying to "find solutions" for their children.

DIGITAL TEACHER

SCHOOL YEAR 2018-19 MONTERREY, MEXICO

Every year the TI Department send out and email inviting teachers to become part of the Digital Teachers group. This is the first year I apply and I got accepted to be part of the team.

The reason why I decided to join is because I look forward to having conversations with other colleagues to learn about new ways to implement technology in my class and also to have an allotted time for Professional Learning Community.

SE VOLUNTEER LEAD TEACHER: Artes Visuales

AUGUST 2018 MONTERREY, MEXICO

A cohort of 18 teachers, including me, had the opportunity to try out the "Reforma Educativa de México". I got assigned the part for Visual Arts.

The task consisted of 10 lessons that needed to be designed completely following the new teaching norms. Each lesson had a purpose and a prompt and based on that, the teacher has to design a lesson. I used backwards planning and I based several of the lessons on what I am currently teaching.

What surprised me the most was how many of the things that are proposed in the new reform are things we take for granted as best practices at ASFM. I hope that this reform does get implemented as both teachers and students will be greatly benefitted by it.

MANIFEST URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL

MAY 2018 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Manifest takes place during one day throughout the different buildings of Columbia. Several streets are closed so that students can have an area for a stage and have street vendor type spaces so they can sell their art as well. In every of the buildings you can see numerous displays ranging from photography, fashion design, visual art, cinema, music, etc.

The vibe you get from walking amongst all of the students is of happiness and a strong sense of pride to have culminated they college years.

Having had the opportunity to attend has given me a better insight at what kind of students attend Columbia. This is helpful when having conversations with HS students who are unsure of where to apply and if it will be a good fit for them or not.

I was very lucky to be invited and be an active part of the event as well.

"Teachers are designers who frame emotional learning."

I was fortunate to be able to attend the National Art Education Association Annual Convention in Seattle, Washington.

Part of the PD experience included the Pre-Conference called Making Knowledge/Moving Knowledge: focusing on knowledge building and mobilization, through and of research, in the field of art education. Supported by the National Art Education Foundation, the conference is structured around the following questions:

What motivates us to pursue and mobilize knowledge?

How is knowledge identified and defined?

What counts for knowledge in art education?

How is knowledge constructed in our field?

How is knowledge mobilized? Translated? For whom and for what purposes?

What knowledge is meaningful to stakeholders from a variety of contexts?

What makes movement in the field?

I attended five conferences that day, including two plenary sessions. What I find most valuable from that day is listening to other educators who are as passionate as me in looking for ways to connect with my students and to keep growing as an educator.

When the full conference began I also attended three other hands-on workshops:

MARCH 21: Atelier Tour and Drawing Workshop With Tenaya Sims

MARCH 22: Da Vinci’s Heart Pounding Studies: Layering Authentic Scientific Illustration with the Emotional and Expressive Heart

MARCH 23: Using the Visual Art Journal to Discover the Student Voice

All of these sessions plus the many others I attended gave me a boost of energy that is needed to every educator more often than not. The opportunity to talk and listen to others going through similar situations and coming up with solutions that help both of us is extremely enriching.

I look forward to having more opportunities similar to this.

INCLUSION GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Jorge Eslava

MARCH 2018 MONTERREY, MEXICO

Dr. Eslava talked about the need to bring students with different abilities and disabilities to schools. the integration of every type of learner is the best way for everyone to learn from each other.

He spoke of everyone having a certain type of disability, from wearing glasses to having Down Syndrome and how connecting with each other enriches us and makes us grow.

MARCH 2018 MONTERREY, MEXICO

A group conforming of teachers, Admin, Wellness support staff and parents were invited to a conference about Sexual Diversity and Inclusion presented by two ASF Guadalajara counselors: Paty Marti and Gloria Jimenez.

These ladies talked about their experience at ASF Guadalajara as the school and community have grown in acceptance and inclusion regarding families and students who are sexually diverse.

I am so happy that we are having more and more of these talks happening at ASFM because it is important to be cognizant of the fact that these situations are also happening here and more than just being tolerant, we need to become fully inclusive.

LIVE CURIOUS, GO BEYOND

FEBRUARY 2018 MONTERREY, MEXICO

Live Curious is a professional development opportunity to meet educators from other schools and learn from them.

This year, I had the pleasant surprise to reconnect with a colleague from a school I worked at because she was a presenter at the conference!

FEBRUARY 2018 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Skye Rust has been visiting ASFM for the past three years. As an Admissions Officer she makes time to come to my AP Studio Art 2D/3D Design classes to talk to my students about Columbia and the opportunities they can have if they choose to attend Columbia.

After she is done with her presentation, Skye takes time to talk to each of my students individually about the portfolios they are creating for AP. She gives them feedback and poses questions that help the students enhance their work.

INCLUSION CONFERENCES FOR PARENTS @ ASFM

FEBRUARY 2018 MONTERREY, MEXICO

I attended these workshops:

Overcoming Social Hardships at School

Fernando López Elizondo was my student during his middle school years. He presented a TedX Talk he did in May of 2017 and then he proceeded to talk about his experience at ASFM. ASFM has been his school since he was in Nursery and he has overcome many challenges, one of the biggest one was communication. It was eye opening to listen to his perspective of is experience at ASFM.

Myths and Realities about Bullying: Gabriela Campoy, MS Asst. Principal; Jane Wong, MS Counselor; Virginia Rodriguez, Elementary Counselor.

These three presenters made a clear distinction between: teasing, being mean, being rude and bullying. In this current era, these behaviors have overlapped each other and small displays of them have been referred to as bullying. It is important to clarify the details of any situation where a person was wronged and find out what happened so that it can be dealt with accordingly.

Organization and Planning in Secondary School

James King, HS Learning Specialist. James talked about the works he does with students when they ask to go see him. He is aware of the educational challenges of the students and then makes the necessary accommodations for each one so that they can be successful independently.

The biggest take away I had from this event was knowing that ASFM is very serious about becoming an Inclusive school. Many educators, staff members and parents are invested in helping create the change and I am very thankful for this opportunity.

INCLUSION BADGE

OCTOBER 2017 - OCTOBER 2019 MONTERREY, MEXICO

In the Fall of 2017, with a group of 40 ASFM educators, I started a course with Lee Ann Jung called "Inclusion Badge: Individuals with Special Needs". The purpose of the badge is to begin training towards becoming an inclusive educator at ASFM.

One of ASFM's objectives is to become an inclusive school and with the support of these programs all ASFM educators will be trained and prepared for this change.

This we believe:

At ASFM every child is different.

At ASFM every child deserves to be successful.

At ASFM every child deserves to have a sense of belonging.

An inclusive learning environment creates these conditions for every child in the school.

Parents have a huge role in creating this inclusive environment.

Not only does it boost student achievement for every child, it creates a happy and joyful school culture.

On May of 2017, I and three other ASFM teachers, attended the Project Zero Professional Development in Pittsburgh, PA.

I was able to attend workshops that ranged from making connections with students to having a workshop inside a museum. One of the things that made this conference different from others is that the venues changed every day. The conferences and workshops started in Quaker Valley Middle School in Sewickley, PA and then moved to Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History and the University of Pittsburgh’s famous Cathedral of Learning classroom building.

LIVE CURIOUS, GO BEYOND

FEBRUARY 2017 MONTERREY, MEXICO

This is a conference that takes place at ASFM and it is organized by the Digital Teachers from both campuses.

I look forward to the mix of workshops and sessions that will be offered by colleagues and external teachers.

TEACHING, LEARNING, COACHING CONFERENCE

NOVEMBER 2016 DALLAS, TEXAS

I attended the Teaching, Learning, Coaching Conference with the main purpose of becoming a better leader for the Fine Arts Department and thus help my department become better teachers as well. One of the main focuses of the conference was “coaching”.

The workshops and conference has helped me prepare and be a better observer and coach as I am doing department observations in semester 2 of the 2016-17 school year.

JUEGOS EDUCATIVOS PARA LA PAZ

NOVEMBER 2015 QUERETARO, MEXICO

A group of 20 MS educators, myself included, had the opportunity to travel to Querétaro to participate in a professional development called "Juegos Educativos para la Paz" .

The focus of the workshop we were going to participate in was "Resolución No-Violenta de Conflictos". It's main purpose is to teach and promote healthy communication amongst people. What makes this conference different from others I have attended is that everything is done through games. And through this games, we learn together.

It was a unique experiences and I am thankful I got to be a part of it.

PAT HANDLY DH TRAINING: STRENGTHENING OUR COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP

OCTOBER 2015 MONTERREY, MEXICO

"When coaches and teachers interact equally as partners, good things happen."

What Good Coaches Do - Jim Knight

Pat Handly led a workshop for department heads at ASFM. The main purpose of the workshop was: Collaborative Leadership.

The four learning points were:

-Getting Better at Classroom Observations: We reviewed Doug Fishers lesson design and how it can be used to collect evidence

-Looking for Learning: Gathering and interpreting formative data based on student responses

-Reflection-based Professional Conversations Based on Student Learning: We observed two pro's Jim Knight and Ronald Lalonde

-Designing Learning-based Meetings: We were able to learn, create and feel comfortable to implement the observations with our colleagues

Since then, I have used these observation tools with my department. I have done informal drop-ins as well as a full formal observation process, depending on what is needed.

The biggest take away from the observations for me are the conversations my colleagues and I have afterwards. I get to see other educators teaching styles and I get to learn new approaches I can the take back to my practice.

I am thankful my department allows me to come into their spaces and learn from them.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT INSTITUTES TRAINING

JULY 2014 ATLANTA, GEORGIA

“Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose.” Charles Eames

This summer I had the opportunity to attend an AP Summer Workshop in Atlanta, GA at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The classes took place at the schools campus and it was an eye opening experience as I got to learn about this school that has been attended by several ASFM alums. My focus this summer is to learn more about the Studio Art 3D Design class that I will begin teaching on August 2014.

Kevin Cole, a local artist, was the professor. He was very knowledgeable and shared many tips and ideas to use with our students. As part of the class we also got to visit a local gallery and see what the art scene is like in Atlanta.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT INSTITUTES TRAINING

JULY 2013 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

In August of 2013 I will begin teaching an AP class called Studio Art 2D Design. In order to learn more about the class and its requirements I am attending a Summer Workshop in Chicago at the Columbia College Chicago.

The presenters name is Barbara Sunday and she is known in the AP community as someone who is up to date on the latest AP news regarding the class.

During the workshop I got to meet an array of AP teachers from around the world. Having the opportunity to interact and learn with and from them left me feeling ready for the new challenge ahead.

TRI-ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

SEPTEMBER 2011 PANAMA CITY, PANAMA

I attended the Tri-Association Conference with the special focus on a Pre-Conference session called "How to develop positive relationships and reduce conflicts in your school" offered by Dr. William Purkey and Dr. John Novak.

What I learned from this pre-conference were diverse techniques on how to approach a difficult situation and try to turn it into a positive. I also found other sessions at the main conference that helped me grow as an educator.

TRI-ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

SEPTEMBER 2010 MONTERREY, MEXICO

This year Tri-Association Conference is taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.

This is a three day event that supports their mission:

The American Schools Association of Central America, Colombia, Caribbean and Mexico works together with more than sixty schools in order to:

*Explore ways to achieve better understanding through international education;

*Improve the quality of teaching and learning in member schools;

*Provide an avenue for communication and cooperation among member institutions and,

*Facilitate cooperation with national, state, local, and non-governmental state, local, and non-governmental agencies in the field of international education.

What I find most enriching from these professional development opportunities is the diversity of sessions that are being offered at conference. There is something for everyone to take back to your classroom and encourage student learning.
