We thought about the main theme for the conference and decided to make banners highlighting certain key words like : Learn, Play, Act, See, Feel and Think. These were used as part of the props the students used on stage.

COLLABORATION WITH PRISCILA CAMARA, AMERICAN SCHOOL OF ARRECIFE

SEPTEMBER 2019

Dear Alejandra, I hope this email finds you well.

I wanted to start by thanking you for being willing to help.

My names is Priscila Câmara, I am the Art Teacher at the American School of Recife. My school principal gave me your e-mail hoping we could talk and maybe you could help me with some questions I have.

This is my first year teaching AP Studio Arts and I am struggling a little bit with all the changes and some details on how somethings are done. If it is possible and okay with you, I would love to give you call and go through a few details that are not completely clear for me.

I was wondering if we could schedule a day this week. I can call you at 5 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Brazilian).

Would you mind giving me your phone number, Skype or face time? Whatever works better for you. Just in case here is my phone number 55 81 XXXXXXXX.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Priscila Câmara

Dr. Jonathan Chenier shared my email with the Principal from the American School of Recife. I was then contacted by Priscila Camara, who is currently teaching AP Art and Design for the first time and has many questions.

Priscila and I were able to have a video conversation where we went over the questions she had, starting from the basics to more in-depth collaboration.

We will touch base again at the beginning of October, after I attend an AP Workshop regarding the new requirements and policies. I hope she finds it helpful.

STANDARDS COLLABORATION WITH ALE CASTANEDA

AUGUST 2019

Ale Castaneda and I have talked about the standards that she needs to use for her Yearbook class and how the National Core Arts Standards are not a good fit for it.

This summer, at the Global Online Academy training, I learned more about their Core Competencies and realized that they could be a good fit for Ale's class.

Ale and I met so that I could give her a tour of the GOA Competencies and find connections on how she can use them for her class. After going over them, Ale found that the competencies match her class needs and will begin implementing them and using them for her rubrics this school year.

COLLABORATION WITH "BEYOND OUR BELL" PODCAST

MARCH 2019

Cory Austen and Jose Alvarez have an educational podcast and are having an open contest for students to come up with a new logo for their website and audio platforms.

The name of the podcast is "Beyond our Bell", and they feature stories by our community worth sharing that not necessarily fit inside the classroom or curriculum.

I designed the contest poster and helped "spread the word" to all HS students.

All students designs are welcome!

CLASSROOM OBSERVATION FEEDBACK

JANUARY 2019

Video Lesson Conversation

Zennhya Escamilla asked me if I could help her by giving her feedback on a classroom observation. The main focus of the observation was to observe the overall management of the class.

After watching her class, Zennhya and I discussed her transitions, the way she delivers instruction and most of all the way the students learn in her class. She has created an atmosphere of respect and trust with the students. The students know when they have to pay attention and listen to instructions and they also know how to work independently.

COLLABORATION WITH 7TH GRADE: BULLETIN BOARD DISPLAYS

YEARLONG

COLLABORATION WITH MS ADVISORY

OCTOBER 2018

MS Showcase and Halloween

Melanie Henning asked me if I could help her create an image based on the "Pin the tail on the donkey" and as it is Halloween themed I did a "Pin the tail on the Halloween Cat". Two students from each grade level played the game and it had a positive response from the middle school.

THE DAY I UNDERSTOOD SBG!

MAY 2018

ASFM is moving towards Standards Based Grading with full implementation on 2019-20. During the 2017-18 I worked closely with Andrea Fossum, the former Curriculum Instruction and Assessment Director. I wanted to understand how the change from numerical grades to SBG worked and what were the implications when grading and giving student feedback.

During the Semana Santa break I joined two Facebook groups that work with SBG, one of the being "Standards Based Grading and Learning". In this group I found two rubrics that different art teachers were using in their classes. I printed both rubrics and started to compare them. (1)

I have a printed poster of the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) and I tracked which standards were used and basically they used the same standards in their HS art classes.

I then took one of my current rubrics and made a correlation of which standards would apply to the rubric and converted my old rubric to standards based rubric (2, 3).

After that, I opened Atlas and created the lesson corresponding to the new rubric using the NCAS Standards. I filled out all the necessary fields, including Enduring Understanding and Essential Questions. (4, 5)

Next, I opened PowerSchool to see what that would mean when I had to report grades. I then understood that I will have four major bins: Create, Present, Reflect, Connect. Depending on the rubric, I will be reporting to each bin independently. I will report to each bin independently so that the students understand their overall grade. So for each "project/rubric" each student will receive 4-5 grades/feedback. (6, 7)

After all this work I completely understood how to use SBG, how to create a rubric based on NCAS standards, how to manage Atlas and finally how to report it ro PowerSchool. It was a long journey but when I did it I felt relief and I also felt ready for the move that we are to embark on.

I shared this process of discovery with my department while we were working on SBG PD sessions. Overall, the big picture start and end process helped my peers understand what we are doing.

I also invited other departments to come into my room so I could explain it to them as well, like Business and some Math teachers. Again, seeing the big picture helped understanding the wok that is to be done.

COLLABORATION WITH GREEN TEAM: EFFETA TREE DESIGN

APRIL 2017

The Green Team asked me if I could design a tree to celebrate the 40 years of EFFETA in Monterrey.

I was given three wooden panels to work with. I distributed the three design amongst the three panels and then I painted it.

Once that was done, ASFM and Effeta students collaborated to add the bottle caps to give it th finishing touch.

COLLABORATION WITH GUADALUPE REYES

SEPTEMBER 2016

Over the years I have become friends with a numerous amount of staff members that work in diverse areas. At the beginning of this school year, Guadalupe Reyes approached me and asked if I could help him out with the painting of a couple of signs used in the soccer fields. Of course I said yes to helping him. I am thankful that people feel comfortable coming to ask for my help and that I can be of assistance as well.
