New Year’s Resolutions are typically broken within a few months of every new year. In fact, according to Psychology Today, 80-90% of resolutions are broken by February of the year they are made. There are various reasons that are cited, some of which are setting unrealistic expectations, lacking good planning skills, and not staying motivated.
For our mental health, instead of making resolutions, let us develop a plan using the 7 C’s. They are as follows:
Connection - Build supportive relationships.
Coping - Develop strategies to manage stress.
Compassion - Be kind to ourselves and to others.
Confidence - Believe in ourselves and let us surround ourselves with those who believe in us.
Character - Take responsibility for our actions.
Competence - Find things that make us feel capable of achieving our goals.
Clarity - Have a clear understanding of our goals.
How do the 7 C’s help us?
They build resilience. Learning from every experience helps us become more flexible in our thinking.
They help us manage stress. When we erase the negative thoughts from our mind and replace them with positive thoughts, we learn to believe in ourselves, we become more confident in ourselves, and we develop a healthy perspective of the world.
They enhance growth. These skills give us the mindset that we are not the problem and other people are not the problem. The problems are the problems, so let us solve them, building a support system with others who are willing to help us solve the problems. Let us not create problems. Let us solve them, and it is okay to walk away from problem makers. This is a healthy boundary.
Something we can love about the 7 C’s is that we can use them as a foundation for the rest of our lives, and we can practice them over time. We do not have to master them all at once. The first relationship we have is with ourselves, and using the 7 C’s are a lifetime achievement, for our mental health, and they help us develop healthy relationships, which also take a lifetime to build. “It is not about speed, distance, or perfection. It is about direction” (David Powlison)..
