Dear nex+Gen Community,
The last two weeks of the semester are upon us. Here are all the important happenings at nex+Gen:
Our annual Career Fair, hosted here at Nex+Gen Academy, is a meaningful event where parents, facilitators, students, alumni, and community members come together to help prepare students for their future. By participating, you’ll play a valuable role in giving students the chance to explore potential careers, understand the education and training required, and develop essential life skills.
We are currently seeking presenters who can speak about their profession, daily responsibilities, career journey, and any advice they may have for young people beginning to consider their own paths. Presentations typically last about 15 minutes, with time included for student questions.
If you’re interested in participating, please fill out this form. If you have questions or want more information, please reach out to Alison Floyd, floyd_a@aps.edu.
We would be thrilled to have you join us! Thank you for considering this opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our students.
Chromebook Chargers
We are noticing an increase in students requesting to borrow chargers. All students have been issued a charger with their Chromebook. Please help remind your student to add both their Chromebook and charger to their backpacks so they have what they need for each class. Ms. Granone is available at the front desk to support students having issues with their Chromebook and/or charger.
Film Festival
Students and families of Nex+Gen, we are hosting a film festival to help showcase the hard work our students have achieved! It is on December 11th, from 6pm to 7pm. Students, families, and staff are all welcome to watch the students' projects. We can't wait to see everybody there!
Winter Spirit Week:
Winter is coming and we hear the sleighbells ringing. To celebrate the winter, there is a spirit week from December 15 to the 19. The days are as follows: Monday (15)-Winter PJ Day ; Tuesday(16)- Family Photos-match with your friends; Wednesday(17)-Sweater Weather- ugly sweater day; Thursday(18)-Grinch vs. Who’s. We hope to see you dressed up.
Cram Jam:
To help prepare for finals later this month, we are holding a Cram Jam! It is December 15th, after school until 5 pm. This event will be a study group, where students may study with their peers or get help from their teachers on subjects they might want further help with. There will be snacks, and donations from families and students are welcome! We hope to see students there! Good luck on your finals, Griffins!
Math Concept Quizzes: As you all hopefully know by this time, retaking Concept Quizzes is the most impactful way to improve your grade in math classes at nex+Gen. Concept Quiz retakes will be accepted no later than the following dates for each of our math classes: Algebra 1, Geometry, PreCalculus, Calculus: Wednesday, 12/10, in after-school math tutoring Algebra 2: Monday, 12/15, at the Cram Jam
Nex+Gen Academy Exams: Final exams will be held on Wednesday, December 17, and Thursday, December 18.
Friday, December 19, is an exam make-up day; no classes will be held.
If your student needs to make up an exam, they must schedule an appointment directly with their teacher.
eCademy Exams
e-Cademy final exams are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, and Wednesday, December 17. These exams are in-person and should be arranged with the e-Cademy teacher. Nex+Gen students usually take e-Cademy exams on the Del Norte High School campus.
If you have any questions, please contact our counselor, Ms. Hastings, at hastings_c@aps.edu.
Winter Break: Winter break will run from December 20th to January 5th. The first day of classes for the second semester will be January 6th. If you have any concerns about class schedules, please contact Ms. Hastings as soon as possible.
Student Transfers to nex+Gen Academy: Know a Student Interested in Attending nex+Gen Academy? The admissions process has changed slightly this year. Families must now apply for a transfer through the ParentVue system, and the admissions lottery will be held on December 1st. After December 1st, students will be accepted on a rolling basis as space allows.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Granone at nicole.granone@aps.edu.
On November 8th, six Nex+Gen students participated in the very challenging UNM/PNM Math Contest - Round 1. We are very proud of all of them, and excited to announce that based on their performance in round 1, three of the six students were selected to move on to round 2! Congratulations to Kai Schwartz De Rossi, Jonathan Ortley, and Emma Haines. All participants are invited to a Public Lecture by Professor Elizabeth Gross from the University of Hawaii at Manoa preceding Round 2 of the contest on Saturday, February 14 at UNM.
Welcome to the Team, Ms. Makayla Doyle-Session!
We are thrilled to welcome Makayla Doyle-Session to the nex+Gen Academy team as our newest Educational Assistant.
Ms. Doyle-Session’s path into education began with poetry—a craft she developed and performed throughout her high school years. Her artistic work opened doors for her to travel across the United States, sharing her words at community and school events. She later expanded her impact by teaching poetry workshops for Albuquerque Public Schools in partnership with Warehouse 505, where she discovered a deep passion for supporting young people in finding their voices and building confidence through creative expression.
Makayla is currently in her second year of pursuing her bachelor’s degree in education and is excited to bring her talents, energy, and heart for students to nex+Gen Academy. She looks forward to building strong relationships, uplifting student voices, and contributing to the positive culture and community that make nex+Gen such a special place to learn and grow.
Please join us in welcoming Ms. Doyle-Session to the Griffin family!
Our Nex+Gen students are diving into meaningful work as we wrap up the semester. This week, 10th graders in World Studies are recording their own podcasts as part of the Americas Project. Students are exploring history, culture, and global connections
Please join the nex+Gen Digital Film Class to celebrate the production of their horror films this year! The event will take place on Thursday, December 11 at 6pm in the Cyberhall at nex+Gen. You will have a chance to meet the teams of filmmakers and give feedback on their work!

The Holidays can be stressful. A 2023 survey by the American Psychological Association found that 89% of U.S. adults feel stressed during the holiday season, with 41% reporting higher stress levels compared to other times of the year.
The New Mexico Department of Health recommends the following ways to take care of yourself this holiday season (Mrs. Hastings has included some ideas next to the recommendations):
Acknowledge your feelings. All feelings are important. Manage them by taking a walk, reading, exercising, and even crying.
Avoid unhealthy coping skills. Build an emotional toolbox that includes anything that decreases stress like talking to a close family member, connecting with a trusted friend, and playing board games with your family.
Stick to a budget. It is okay not to overspend. Be transparent with family and friends and bake them some cookies or give them a Christmas card, letting them know how much you appreciate them.
Find support. We all need someone to connect with.
Connect with the world around you. Go on a hike, take a walk and breathe in the fresh air, meditate outdoors, or go to a park and enjoy nature.
Take care of yourself. Go to the gym, talk to a trusted adult, read a good book, enjoy a day off, or treat yourself to a massage.
Don't abandon healthy habits. Eat healthy foods, sleep well, rest.
Stay active. Go for a long walk, dance in the living room, walk around the house, do some jumping jacks, and stretch.
