Last week, Nex+Gen Academy hosted its highly anticipated annual Alumni Day, bringing together past and present students for a day of connection, reflection, and fun. The event kicked off with engaging panel discussions, where alumni shared their diverse life paths, career journeys, and insights with current students. These conversations provided valuable advice and inspiration, helping students envision their own futures beyond high school.
Following the discussions, the excitement continued at the Del Norte gym, where students and staff faced off against alumni in spirited games of volleyball and dodgeball. Laughter, friendly competition, and school spirit filled the gym as everyone enjoyed the lively matches.
The day concluded with a warm and welcoming reception, offering alumni a chance to reconnect with old friends, teachers, and mentors. Alumni Day remains a cherished tradition at Nex+Gen Academy, celebrating the lasting bonds within our school community.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the dedicated parent volunteers who helped make the reception successful. Nex+Gen parents make such an important contribution to our school by providing the luncheon that day. Rob Richardson (Ryan, class of ‘2025) and Rob Rossi (Kai, class of 2027) helped set up and serve all of us. The following families provided delicious food: Rivera family, Nuñez-Medina family, Juarez/Bentley family, McCullough family,Klump family, Figueroa family, Stewart family, Candelaria/Wynn family, Hemmert family, Fletcher family, Gonzales family, Enriquez family, Espinoza-Márquez family, Burnett family, Lutje family, and Allison family
As part of our school-wide project addressing food waste and insecurity in our community, Nex+Gen students visited Santa Fe last Wednesday, paid for by the grant money that our students helped us propose for and win last semester!
These students were interested in learning more about the legislative process, specifically SB4: Healthy Universal School Meals Act, which passed in 2023, allowing for all public schools in NM to provide free lunch and breakfast. They got a comprehensive tour from Amanda Breiding, the House Chief of Staff, and some speaking time with Senator Michael Padilla, who sponsored SB4 back in 2023.
Nex+Gen Academy has recently revived its robotics team, and in just three months, we have already achieved remarkable success. Against the odds, we were one of only 28 teams to qualify for the prestigious VEX Robotics State Championship, held at Cibola High School on March 8, 2025. Throughout the competition, we gained invaluable experience, learning from both our victories and challenges. Looking ahead, we are determined to build on this foundation, refine our strategies, and continue improving our robot design. Our ultimate goal is to advance beyond the qualifying rounds and compete in the championship round—just as we did in March 2022, when we won the state championship. Our team is made up of a passionate and hardworking group of students: Bryan Bustamante, Justin Bentley, Simeon Ortley, Serenity Martinez, and Forrest Garcia.
Nex+Gen students are making a difference in the community by volunteering at the Road Runner Food Bank throughout the week. This effort is part of our school-wide "Food for Thought" project, which focuses on food waste, sustainability, and addressing food insecurity. Students are actively participating in sorting, packing, and distributing food to help ensure that families facing hunger have access to nutritious meals. Their dedication and hard work demonstrate our school's commitment to service and making a positive impact beyond the classroom.
Nex+Gen Academy students are actively engaged in developing and maintaining our composting station, where food waste will be processed as part of our school-wide Food for Thought project. This initiative aims to promote sustainability by transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to support our gardening efforts.
In addition to composting, students are also working on constructing and maintaining raised garden beds, which will play a key role in the launch of our new Roots and Shoots gardening elective. This hands-on course, designed to teach students about sustainable agriculture, plant science, and environmental stewardship, will be introduced in the 2025-2026 school year. The elective will be taught by Mr. Schlee and will provide students with the opportunity to apply ecological principles in a real-world setting.
Through these projects, nex+Gen Academy continues to foster a culture of environmental responsibility, innovation, and experiential learning.

How can we meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs? This is the driving question that seniors in ESS have been exploring in small groups as they’ve focused on a particular dimension of sustainability. Team topics ranged from geoengineering, nuclear energy, walkable cities, and more. Thursday they presented their learning and their answers to the driving question to nex+Gen sophomores and McKinley Middle School 8th graders.
On February 26th, Nex+Gen sophomores put their Spanish skills to the test while dining at García’s on San Mateo. As part of a beloved Spanish I tradition, students practiced ordering food and engaging in conversation entirely in Spanish, demonstrating their growing confidence and proficiency in the language. The event not only strengthened their communication skills but also fostered a deeper appreciation for Hispanic culture and cuisine
Mock Trial took center stage in Albuquerque the weekend of February 21st and 22nd where teams from around New Mexico presented a murder trial. Nex+ Gen students practiced for months to prepare questions, practice witness roles, learn objections, and hone their argumentative skills in preparation for the two day competition. Competitors included: Nathaniel Cole, Ana Hunter, Autumn Ringia, Kai Schwartz De Rossi, Hannah Hemmert, and Brooklynn Rogers. Nathaniel Cole (senior) won multiple awards for Best Witness and Hannah Hemmert (sophomore) won multiple awards for Best Attorney. The entire team demonstrated the pillars of Integrity, Respect, Trust, Perseverance, and Responsibility which should make the community proud; the team’s commitment to their chosen roles and willingness to work with a growth mindset made the competition a success and showed these students have epitomized the school pillars. Congratulations to Nex+ Gen’s 2025 Mock Trial team!
To be a part of the 2026 Mock Trial Team students will need to be enrolled in the Speech and Debate class.
