Dear nex+Gen community,
We have a lot going on at nex+Gen Academy. Here are the latest updates:
Food Delivery Services: Over the last month, several food delivery services, such as DoorDash and Grub Hub, have attempted to deliver to the school. We do not accept such deliveries for students because the person delivering must be on the student's synergy list. I appreciate your cooperation on this important matter.
FAFSA Night: We will be holding a FAFSA night on Monday, Dec 2 (also known as next Monday) from 6:30 - 8:30 here at NexGen. Ms. Headley will talk a little bit about the FAFSA form overall and about FSA IDs.
Shelter in Place: We had a shelter-in-place at the end of the day on November 18th. The Shelter-in-Place was called by the Albuquerque Police Department due to police activity on San Mateo Blvd. This occurred at the end of the school day. Police will sometimes do this to keep students off the roads while they are dealing with an incident. The shelter-in-place went smoothly. Here are some things to remember during a shelter-in-place:
Student cell phone use is not restricted. You should be able to reach your student via text.
Do not attempt to pick up your student at school during a shelter-in-place. No students will be released.
Avoid calling the front desk for information. Front office staff typically don't have up-to-the-minute information.
Enrollment Open House: Nex+Gen Academy has updated its Admissions website for this enrollment season. Check it out here: learnaboutnexgen.com. Join us for an informative tour or attend our Enrollment Open House on Tuesday, December 10th from 6:00–7:00 PM to discover what sets us apart.
Thanksgiving Break: This year's Thanksgiving Break will run tomorrow, November 27th-Sunday, December 1st. Classes resume on Monday, December 2nd.
Exams: Semester 1 exams will take place on December 19th and 20th.
Career Fair: Annual Nex+Gen Career Fair: Monday, December 9th, 2024 from 11 to noonvan
Would you like to share your career experiences with Nex+Gen students? Within our unique learning model, we work hard to keep our projects relevant and to provide authentic opportunities for our students to think about issues outside of the classroom.
The career fair, held here at Nex+Gen, is an important annual initiative, a collaborative effort in which parents, facilitators, students, alumni, and other community members work together to meet our goal of preparing Nex+Gen students for the road ahead. We want to provide opportunities for Nex+Gen students to investigate careers, explore the education and training to achieve their goals, and practice important life skills. Our career fair is an important part of this effort. Are you available on Monday, December 9th from 11 am to noon? If so, please fill out this google form. If you have any questions about the 2024 Career Fair, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Kelly McCloskey-Romero at kelly.mccloskey-romero@aps.edu.
Winter Break: Winter Break will begin on December 21st and run through January 6th. The first day of the second semester will be January 7th.
The APS Foundation has announced that nex+Gen Academy will receive a Schoolwide Impact Award of $10,000 for Food for Thought. Nex+Gen Academy students work on authentic problems in their projects in every class. In the Food for Thought project, students address the problems of food insecurity, waste, and extreme poverty, empowering every student at the school to do something about these serious community problems. Through volunteering locally, redistributing food, creating a school garden, developing a composting system, and organizing clothing and toy drives, every single nex+Gen student is involved in this project.
nex+Gen Academy seniors in Environmental Science & Statistics (ESS) worked in the UNM Stable Isotopes Lab processing their plant and porcupine quill samples. Their project mentor is Dan Shaw, a teacher and coordinator of the Field & Community Science Program at Bosque School.
nex+Gen has a new championship flag football team The 25ers. Congratulations!!!

seniors presented their Valle de Oro projects to nex+Gen facilitators and underclassmen. They did an excellent job demonstrating their learning from throughout the project. Additionally, they conducted themselves very professionally - not just in their presentations but also in their interactions with younger students and facilitators. Photos are below:
Engineering students visited Spaceport America, located in Truth or Consequences, NM with other MESA students. They learned about the science behind rocketry, microgravity impacts on different substances, and more! They also learned about commercial space exploration through Virgin Galactic.
