Dear nex+Gen community,
I hope you and your family are having a restful summer. We are busy here getting ready for the upcoming school year. Registration forms for 2024-2025 are now available on ParentVue. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Here are some more important announcements:
Transitioning to APS email: For the 2024-2025 school year nex+Gen Academy is transitioning from the nexgenacademy.com domain to the aps.edu domain. This means that all school emails will go through APS email. Here is a staff listing with contact information: Staff Contact List
Nex+Gen Public Calendar: As part of our transition to the APS domain, we have a new Nex+Gen Public Calendar. The new calendar is visible below. Here is the link to the new calendar: Nex+Gen Public Calendar
Follow us on Facebook: We publish regular stories on Facebook. Keep up with all the nex+Gen adventures here: nex+Gen Facebook Page
Elective Changes: Reel History and Drama will not be offered next school year on campus. This is due to staffing and student interest reasons. We will be adding Speech and Debate this fall.
Silent Bell Schedule Change: We do have minor changes to our bell schedule for the 2024-2025 school year. We will begin at the same time. However, the day will end 15 minutes earlier. The new bell schedule is published below.
The Junior Year Mentorship Experience: As part of Nex+Gen Academy's commitment to making our graduates college and career-ready, juniors are encouraged to participate in a 40+ hour mentorship. This program allows students to shadow professionals, gain real-world experience, and integrate their learning with their future college and career pathways. All juniors with a GPA of 2.0 or higher can enroll in the mentorship program at the beginning of both the Fall and Spring semesters. Students on track to graduate with distinction must complete their mentorship by the end of their junior year at Nex+Gen.
If you have any questions about the nex+Gen Academy mentorship program or are interested in being a mentor for a nex+Gen junior, please get in touch with the mentorship coordinator, christopher.potter@aps.edu
CNM Accuplacer Exam for Sophomores: Due to technical and logistical problems, we were unable to administer the CNM Accuplacer exam at Nex+Gen Academy this spring. We encourage 10th-grade students to take it on their own over the summer so that they will be prepared to take a dual credit class of their choice next year. Here is a link to the CNM website that has all of the information for dual credit students. Steps to Becoming a Dual Credit Student. It can also be a good idea for students to talk to the Dual Credit academic advisor at CNM. They can make an appointment online. Your 10th-grade student should have already completed their CNM application as a dual credit student and set up their CNM account. They will need their CNM ID number, username, and password to log into the Accuplacer exam.
Space Still Available: Help us find the nex+Gen class of 2028. If you know someone interested in attending nex+Gen Academy, direct them to the Admissions Page. .
On May 15, seniors closed out their final year together with a barbeque at Nex+Gen. As part of this tradition, they also left their handprints on our school storage container. Farewell Class of 2024! Best of luck to you.
The nex+Gen MESA Team competed at the National Engineering Design Competitions (NEDC) in San Diego, CA. This summer. They prepared for four events - Technical Pitch, Poster, Project Proposal, and Symposium. The nex+Gen team won third place. Congratulations!!!
The team members are: Fiona Vh Jenson, Dylan Elks, and Areli Vh Jenson
Advisor: Ms. Laura White
See the Technical Pitch part of the competition below.
We are very happy to say that our Griffin Reader Leaders collaboration with Governor Bent Elementary School is alive and well! Most Mondays, Nex+Gen students went to Ms. Paulina Pino’s kindergarten classroom to listen to the kids read to them. We are proud of our Nex+Gen teenagers for being role models and promoting literacy. Ms. Floyd, Ms. McCloskey-Romero, Ms. Ximena, Mr. Schlee, Dr. Neuber, Ms. Berkompas, Ms. Mancha, Mr. Minella, and Ms. White all brought their advisories to interact with the Governor Bent students and be an active part of this Nex+Gen tradition.
For nex+Gen facilitators, professional learning continues through the summer. Our Math Department worked together at the Inspiring Mathematical Minds Conference this summer to network with Math Educators all over our district and gather excellent new research and practices to enhance our teaching! We're already looking forward to next school year!
For their final project of the year, the 9th graders created their own mock trials, based on the books The 57 Bus or Just Mercy. Each team had to assign attorney and witness roles, develop a game plan for either defense or prosecution, and try their case in front of a real judge! In preparation, the students met with a Juvenile District Attorney and a Court of Appeals clerk in addition to researching on their own. A huge thank you to Judge Bayless and Judge Allison for their time and energy in court proceedings.
