On the last week of high school seniors are usually creating thank you cards, giving last minute hugs, and saying their final goodbyes to their coaches. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the class of 2020’s athletes did not get the opportunity to.
I was trying to write a positive article as a senior who has already experienced so much adversity this school year. I want this article to be a platform for my fellow peers to express their gratitude to their coaches since they unfortunately don’t get the chance to.
The first person I communicated with was football captain and Harry Herbert. Hebert has had many great coaches throughout his athletic career, but Coach Giomini was someone who was particularly special.
“Gio was my 6th grade math teacher and has never left my side since the day we met,” Herbert said. “Gio will always hold a special place in my heart and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to have him as a teacher, coach, and mentor.”
Another senior who wanted to express her gratitude was tennis captain Bianca Henline. Henline was an asset to the varsity tennis team and wanted to thank Coach Don Stevens for helping her on and off the court.
“He offered me incredible opportunities, such as the ability to teach young players, compete in numerous tournaments, and even meet with a Cleveland Clinic neurosurgeon,” said Henline. “I will forever appreciate his encouraging words and countless hours he has dedicated to me over the last four years.”
An additional senior who wanted to express their thanks was Micheal Kuban. Kuban is extremely appreciative for his cross country and track coach, Coach Juergens.
“Coach Juergens has been my coach year-round ever since the beginning of my freshmen year, and he has really helped me hit my stride in long distance running,” Kuban said. “Coach Juergens always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, and I am extraordinarily grateful for that.”
Another senior who unfortunately didn’t get to play their final season of lacrosse is captain Kylee Collins. Collins wanted to thank Coach Darci.
“Coach Darci is a driven, passionate, understanding, and talented person,” said Collins. “I am going to miss her so much, but I know she’ll always be there for me even if that means 20 years from now.”
Lastly, as soccer captain I wanted to thank Coach Reutter. Coach Ruetter is someone who makes you smile no matter the occasion. When Reutter was my coach I was always excited to go to practice. I will miss him greatly.
Although the seniors did not get to express their thanks to their coaches, the coaches will always be cherished and remembered.
