The Robotics Club is currently continuing to meet during the hard pandemic times. The club is run by Mr. Svec, with about 20 members involved. It’s being run about the same as it has been run in past years, but all the competitions the students participate in are online. The members meet every Monday and Wednesday to build robots for the previously mentioned competitions, with each robot having to do a specific task. The current project the students are working on deals with building a robot that can pick up a ball and placing it in a bucket.
The ALHS Book Club, a new edition to Avon Lake’s extensive list of clubs, is staying very safe amid COVID-19. During the meetings all participants wear masks and participate in social distancing. Also, if school returns online, they have measures in place to make sure they can still meet virtually. With using Zoom and the breakout room feature in the program.
Every other Thursday, Environmental Club meets in Mr. Wolf’s room. The students who are in-person sit socially distanced in the room and the remote students join the meeting through Zoom. Before the pandemic, all students would be able to collaborate with each other to work on posters and other creative projects. Currently, students are still able to collaborate on projects, just as long as they are socially distancing themselves. The remote students are on a laptop which is passed around so they are able to participate in the projects as well. Although there are some restrictions put in place, Environmental Club continues to educate and raise awareness of the issues facing our environment to the students of ALHS!
The M.I.N.D. (Moving In New Directions) club centers around mental health awareness and creating a safe space for the students of Avon Lake High School. The club was formed at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year and they meet on a bimonthly schedule via google meet. One meeting of each month focuses around informing members about different areas of mental health including anxiety, depression, and more as well as helping to reduce the stigmas surrounding mental illness. This club has also invited experienced guest speakers to discuss how to promote mental health during these especially stressful times. The second meeting of each month is a relaxed open meeting where club members play games and take time for themselves. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join and you can find the M.I.N.D. club on Instagram @alhsmindclub.
The Avon Lake Drama Club is doing their best to meet during the pandemic. Although COVID-19 eliminated a chance for a production in December, we are still busy with workshops, fundraisers, and planning for next year's show. In the past, the Drama Club has made it their priority to put on a great performance for that year. They would spend the majority of their time at rehearsal and help with the stage, paint sets, and work on costumes on Saturdays. Currently, on Mondays and Wednesdays, the Drama Club offers free dance and acting workshops as a chance to improve your skills. Students must fill out a Health Monitoring form and have their temperatures taken before attending. While meeting all social distancing guidelines, they play drama-related games and perform monologues, as well as practice their choreography with an instructor through Zoom. Even though COVID-19 makes the regular experience challenging, the Drama Club is still committed to working on their skills in the performing arts.
