The competitive cheerleading team just had their SWCs competition this past weekend. The team previously was on a winning streak for SWCs, so they worked extremely hard wanting to defend this title.

“We had been working since august for the one competition, by the competition we had practiced for over 200 hours so a lot of barr work was put into our routines,” senior Chloe Burnworth said.

The team has endured many challenges this year, such the COVID environment and changes and adjusting to an additional team this year.

“The week before the competition was hectic with lots of people and other teams trying to take us down, but we pushed through,” Burnworth said. “We went into the competition confident after every challenge and obstacle that our team personally endured this season.”

However, on competition day things took a turn, but an unfortunate music mishap was met with a smooth recovery by the team.

“ At the competition, we did our traditional routine first in which our music messed up and played quietly so no one could hear it,” Burnworth said. “Our first tumbling pass didn’t get thrown but we bounced back and within 15 seconds you couldn’t even tell anything had happened.”

Despite this mess up, the team still placed second in this section and needed to quickly bounce back for the Gameday portion of the competition.

“We had the same music for our band dance as two other schools so we really tried to make it special and different,” Burnworth said. “We placed second in that as well.”

However, the end result of the whole competition was one that was unexpected and still a point of contention for many SWC cheer teams.

“We were all shocked to see that Midview had won by 20 points,” Burnworth said. “We’ve never had a lead more than our 3 point lead last year.”

Upon seeing the scores from the judges, not much confusion has been cleared up. The score sheets “didn’t make sense”, according to Burnworth. However, the team has decided to direct their attention to the next upcoming competition to put their best foot forward.

“For the first time ever our team is competing in a second competition,” Burnworth said. “We are entering ‘Best in States’ this month and we’re all excited to see how we do in a division one state wide competition.”
