The swim and dive season started out as being “up in the air” due to the team’s primary pool in Oberlin being under COVID restrictions and them not being able to call that place home. Luckily, the Mercy pool in Amherst allowed for them to participate there so the boys and girls swim and dive teams could have a season.
This year, SWCs were last Saturday, January 30th at the Westlake Rec Center in Westlake, Ohio. Both teams competed very well as the boys swim were co-champions with Avon. This season was extra special as the boys have not won SWCs in 20 years.
“The boys in general just stuck together and gave it our all on each set the coach gave us, we swam every meet we came across like our last,” sophomore Tyler Grabowski said.
The boys had a goal and followed through with it. Their hardwork and dedication showed and it paid off for them in the end.
The girls swim team also competed at SWCs and gave it their all. From the ups and downs that continued this season, the girls worked very hard considering the circumstances.
“This season showed, I think, all of us that we can’t take things for granted because they could easily be taken away from us at any point in time,” junior captain Abby Okuma said. “When we had hard workouts and stressful weeks, some of us said that we wanted to quit and not swim. But I think in the end, we all realized that we wouldn’t trade this season for anything.”
Both swim and dive teams had very successful and hardworking seasons as the teams came together and battled through hardships together. Good job shoremen and shoregals and good luck on the rest of the season!
