In the Early Republic, we will study the Election of 1800, which resulted in a tie between Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson, with Alexander Hamilton deciding the outcome in Jefferson´s favor.
We will evaluate the outcomes of John Adams filling the Federal Judge appointments left for Jefferson to serve, creating the midnight judges controversy. We will analyze the Supreme Court Case of Marbury vs Madison, which resulted in John Marshall’s Supreme Court's power of Judicial Review.
We will do analysis of Jefferson and his Louisiana Purchase of territory from France doubling the size of the United States and ushering in the concept of Westward Expansion will be discussed. We will evaluate the findings of the Lewis and Clark expedition of The Louisiana Purchase.
We will learn about the election of James Madison as the 4th president of the U.S. (1809-1817) and how Britain kidnapping American sailors called impressment led to the War of 1812.
We will examine the causes, battles, events and economic effects of the war such as the burning of Washington D.C. , The Battle of Fort McHenry and the victory over the British at The Battle of New Orleans and examine how the Treaty of Ghent ended the war and ushered in the term Nationalism or ¨Era of Good Feelings which was a new love and loyalty for the country.
We will identify important people and their contributions to America during this time period such as Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall and his role in Marbury vs Madison, James Monroe and his negotiations with Napoleon regarding the Louisiana Purchase, Francis Scott Key and his poem titled "The Star Spangled Banner", Andrew Jackson becoming a war hero from his role at The Battle of New Orleans and the roles of Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea and York along their expedition exploring the West.
We will know that Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun became known as War Hawks which urged military confrontation with Britain. We will also compare President Monroe’s foreign policies to that of Washington’s neutrality proclamation.
Finally, we will draw conclusions explaining President Monroe's Doctrine which opposed European settlement in the Americas and how it's the cornerstone for American foreign policy even today.
