During Unit 10
Civil War, we will compare and contrast the Union and Confederate advantages and disadvantages before and during the war.
We will identify individuals and their contributions; describe characteristics of key battles and events including the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation.
We will also explain the major political and geographic changes made at the end of the war and the economic and social impact on the South.
We will analyze the details of the Battle of Fort Sumter as the battle which started the Civil War.
The First Battle of Bull Run which was a Confederate victory but showed that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than either side had anticipated.
We will investigate how the Union's Anaconda Plan to blockade the southern ports was strategically brilliant but poorly executed.
We will draw conclusions as to why the Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day of fighting in the entire Civil War with more than 23,000 casualties.
We will learn of important documents such as Lincoln issuing The Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863 declaring all persons held as slaves in rebellious states shall be free.
We will compare and contrast Lincoln's 1st and 2nd Inaugural Addresses as well as Jefferson Davis Inaugural Address.
We learn of the Siege and Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi which was a Union victory achieving control of the Mississippi River as well as splitting the confederacy in half.
Also, in 1863 The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, titled as The Turning Point of the Civil War, because it was the last time the confederacy will fight in the North and a major Union victory.
Lincoln's most famous speech called The Gettysburg Address to honor those that gave their life in the battle. Examine the roles of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, William Tecumseh Sherman.
The technology developed in warfare which aided the North to be victorious such as the Sharps rifle and advancements in field artillery.
The surrender of confederate forces by General Robert E. Lee to General U.S. Grant at Appomattox Court House Virginia officially ending The Civil War on April 9, 1865.
President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 just 5 days after the war had ended.
